This rare Working Kewpie Doll Clock is a must-have for any collector. Created by Rose O'Neill, the clock features the beloved Kewpie Doll characters and is made from exquisite jasperware.
Rose O'Neill created the Kewpies in 1908. Her illustrations of these adorable cherubic children became extraordinarily popular. The Kewpies are innocent, curious and a bit mischievous.
In 1913 Ms.O'Neill's first dolls were manufactured and soon after she contracted with Schaffer & Vater, known for their high quality workmanship to produce the first Jasperware Kewpie items including this clock.
Her classic signature is pressed into the blue bisque on the back of the clock. There are three controls for the clock. The winding mechanism is wound counter clockwise. There is also a knob to set the time and a slider to increase or descrease the clock speed.
Rose O'Neill was a remarkable woman. She was creative, active, hard working and had excellent business acumen. She was also sensitive, caring and deeply loved her family. She is a good role model for our current times for everyone particularly for girls and women.
Physical Condition
This is a very rare of a working clock designed by Rose O'Neill. The clock keeps accurate time and was recently professionally examined and adjusted by a clock technican. According to the technican, it is the original clock mechanism. The raised white relief of both the Kewpies and flower garland is well detailed; and the separation of the blue background and white relief is crisp with no blurring. This is an excellent example of Jasperware. There is a small chip along the front base. It is 5.75" H, 5.25" W, 1.5" D.
