I believe these antique West African brass and bronze figures did not only function as traditional gold weight figurines but also as chess pieces. See on the pictures how they would line up as chess pieces.
They come in this handmade box that can be seen on the last pictures. I believe the box is made out of a light type of wood covered in leather. It is my belief that the box is also an original handmade product of West Africa, perhaps from Senegal or Gambia.
The brass and bronze figures average about 2.5" in height. The shortest ones are about 2" and the tallest pieces are close to 3."
The total weight of the figures is about 2 pounds and 14 ounces (not counting the box).
This is indeed a unique treasure! Thank you for looking!
