DEL MONTE LODGE
is one of the most magnificent hotel club
houses in the world and operated by the
same management as Hotel Del Monte. The
lodge faces Pebble Beach and the famous
Pebble Beach Golf Course on the shores of
beautiful Carmel Bay.

PAT. OFF.)ROBERT LOUIS STEVENSON HOUSE
Here is one of America\'s most lovely shrines.
It was known as the house of the Frenchman
Jules Simoneon, with whom Stevenson made
his home in 1879. Stevenson was attracted
here from Europe by the woman who later
became his wife, and from this old building
he started making his many Peninsula jaunts.
Stevenson was noted as an essayist, poet and
writer of boys\' stories. It was here that he
wrote \"The Amateur Emigrant,\" \"The Pavil.
ion on the Links,\" \"Treasure Island,\" and
others.
This literary memorial is said to be visited
by more people annually than any other in
E the world, save only Shakespeare\'s home at
Stratford-on-Avon.
B. W. WHITE, MONTEREY, CAL.THE LARKIN HOUSE
In 1832, Thomas O. Larkin came to Mon-
terey. He opened a wholesale and retail
store, and became the first and only United
States Consul to California.
Next to the Larkin House, is an old adobe,
built by Larkin in 1834. Here was head-
quartered William Tecumseh Sherman, when
he was stationed at Monterey. At that time,
the man who was later to be a famous Civil
War General was a Lieutenant.
General Halleck was also headquartered
here. Sherman as a youth in Monterey,
figured in one of Monterey\'s wistful legends.
B. W. WHITE, MONTEREY, CAL.Monterey is one of the most picturesque of
American cities. It is known as the city of
three flags, and the cradle of California\'s his-
tory. The first state capitol was located here,
and today many of the historical landmarks
still stand, and unfold the romance of early
California and \"Old Monterey.\"
Monterey fronts on beautiful Monterey Bay,
where may be seen the fishing fleet at an-
chor, the industrial section of the city\'s
$10,000,000 fishing, canning and packing ac-
tivity. Nearby, the Presidio, is an Army Post
of Field Artillery and Cavalry situated on the
slopes overlooking Monterey Bay, and a back-
ground of matchless beauty.

stitutional Convention met here in September
-1849.
B. W. WHITE, MONTEREY, CAL.Monterey, the first capital of California, is .
situated on the shores of Monterey Bay. It is
rich in historical interest, many of the old
buildings still stand. California\'s first Whaling
Station, which has been restored, was estab-
lished in 1855.
B. W. WHITE, MONTEREY, CAL.THE 17 MILE DRIVE
is without question one of the most notable
drives in the world. The drive passes through
old Monterey, Pacific Grove and along the
rugged coast line of Monterey Peninsula, with
its famous cypress forests, moss beach, Pt. 3
Joe, bird rock, fanshell beach and the lone
cypress on midway point. Pebble Beach and
Del Monte Lodge and many other points of
interest worthy of a separate visit.
B. W. WHITE, MONTEREY, CAL.OLD CUSTOM HOUSE
To most people, the Old Custom House in
Monterey is the most interesting building on
the Pacific Coast. In the earliest days, it was
not only used for conduct of Royal business,
but it was the social center for Spanish aristo-
crats. Here beneath the Spanish Flag, press-
ing matters of state were settled and gala
balls were held. The upper end was built in
1814 by the Spaniards. The center section
was built by the Mexicans when they had
wrested independence from Spain. On July
7th, 1846, Commodore John Drake Sloat raised
the American flag over the building, and the
lower end of the custom house was added on
by the Americans. It is along Adobe building
and stands near the shore of Monterey Bay.

GENUINE CURTEICH-CHICAGO \'C.T. ART-COLORTONE\"THE FIRST THEATRE
This was one of California\'s proudest spots
in early days. Here Spanish, Mexicans and
Americans gathered for entertainment and di.
version. A long rectangular Adobe built by
John A. Swan, popularly known as Jack
Swan, pioneer of 1843, who opened a saloon
and boarding house. At the close of the
Mexican War, some disbanded U.S. soldiers.
gave an amateur performance here which
was so successful that they induced Jack
Swan to fit up the long wing of his saloon for
a theatre. The beloved Jenny Lind is said to
have sung here on her American tour in
1850-52.
