MOUNT VERNON TURN VEREIN 1916 SUMMER FEST DICKERTS OLD POINT COMFORT PARK, BRONX:
$45.00

We are offering a broadside for the Mount Vernon Turn Verein Summer Fest, held at Dickert's Old Point Comfort Park, Boston Road, Eastchester, Bronx, New York on June 17, 1916. The Turner Society, which still exists today in the Bronx, was founded on a system of physical, moral and mental education and development originated by Frederich Ludwig Jahn in Germany in 1813, which was introduced in American in 1848. According to their website, the membership is bound by principles of liberty, tolerance and democracy, and dedicated to offering its members the physical, cultural and social benefits traditional to "Turnerism".
**NOTE** -On January 22, 1916, five months before the summer fest, a fire completely destroyed the Turner building. A new facility was planned and designed for the original site [an illustration of the proposed New Turn Hall is on the broadside].Printed on the broadside is "SURPLUS reverts to the BUILDING FUND". The cornerstone for the new building was laid in July 1916 and the building dedicated one year after the fire. Activities at the fest were Games for Children; Bowling for a Silver Cup prize; a Grand Concert and Dancing. Also, shares were being offered for a 1916 Chevrolet Touring Car, Fully Equipped with Self Starter and Electric Lights, at 50 cents per share. "Won't you buy a share?", Dewey's Garage, Inc.[Not sure how people can share a car - I guess if someone bought 50% of the shares, they would be entitled to drive the car 50% of the time. Sounds kind of strange. **CONDITION** - Excellent. The broadside was laid on a thick piece of posterboard and then covered in shrink wrap which has protected it for the past 108 years.
