Magnificent Wooden Sculpture of Christ - Circa: Early 18 Century For Sale

This an exquisitively carved Baroque Crucifix, probably made in Spain in the Early 18th Century in the manner of The Christ of Clemency (Cristo de la Clemencia) of the Seville Cathedral, Spain. The Christ\'s body displays, in a lifelike manner, the ribcage pressed against his stretched skin, and carefully rendered arms and leg muscles, with visible veins, to highlight his humanity. The hands perfectly carved (the left hand missing portions of fingers), and feet with well-delineated toes and nails. A crown of triple spikes rests over his head that shows a well-rendered lifelike hair. His head is turned down to the right.

The crucifix preserves its original fittings, which is extremelyrare for a crucifix of this age. The cross is made of two natural pieces of wood, painted in black, but now well patinated with the passage of time, which is adorned with incised carved lines within geometrically shaped areas where the hands and feet rests, that have been gilded with real gold. The ends of the cross covered with real silver cups. The cross is inserted in a base that also sports a silver band on its bottom.
