• Before the federal highway numbering system wasimplemented, major automobile routes were knownand marked as "named trails."
• Among the ones labeled on the map are theLincoln Highway, Midland Trail,Pacific Highway, Wonderland Trail, Camino Real, Southern Highway, andBlack & Yellow Trail.
• Named national camps, also known as forts or militarybases, includeBeauregard, Kearney, Cody, Macarthur, Jackson,Dix, Mills, Upton, and Lewis.
• Marked aeroplane routes also include distances in miles.
