Up for sale is a helmet that is done to more Korean War specs, featuring a Rear seam shell that had the older WWII chinstrap on it. This is not abnormal for Korea, though there were the clip on chin straps developed around the time that were in service. Plenty of WW2 Front and Rear seam shells with the sewn on chinstraps were used and were not distinguished between one another in issue. This has a Korean War era liner, but it has been given a Vietnam vintage neckband replacement and sweatband.
Condition Wise:
Shell is good, has been repainted recently as the original paint was long gone. It had probably been painted over at least 5 different times before reaching me and the cork finish was a bit worn but still there. It was very normal to have had repainted shells in Korea as depots had to reverse de-mil or restore stocks to send over to be used.
Chinstrap has been stitched up a bit as a triangular piece was torn out at some point, so that piece was reattached. The hardware has patina (verdigris) on it.
Liner is in good shape with original paint on it, gold and then a white enamel over it but the paint is cracked especially toward the edge and scratched, and the webbing is complete and intact. The canvas does appear to be a bit weaker from age with one small tear 1/4 the way through in the middle from one of the clips.
Sweatband clips have been removed and repainted and reattached, they are a mix of WWII and Korean War era.
The sweatband is supple but the leather is really worn with some parts flaked or scratched off
The neckband is NOS.
Heat stamp legible as either 1232E or 1282E or 12 2E
This is an example that would be good for display or static demonstration use. The webbing is quite old but it does appear in okay shape though it\'s a bit weaker than it otherwise would be. It is wearable, but I would not beat on it too hard.
