ES-1234B HeneageFinch, 4th Earl of Aylesford,PC,FRS,FSA(4July 1751 – 21 October 1812), styledLord Guernseybetween1757 and 1777, was a British politician who sat in theHouse of Commonsfrom 1772 to 1777 when he succeeded toapeerage. He was also a landscape artist. Aylesford was the sonofHeneageFinch, 3rd Earl of Aylesford, and Lady Charlotte Finch, daughterofCharlesSeymour, 6th Duke of Somerset. He was born at his paternalgrandfather\'s residence,Syon House, nearLondon. He was educated atChrist Church, Oxford. Aylesfordwas returned to parliament forCastleRisingin 1772, a seat he held until 1774, and thenrepresentedMaidstoneuntil1777,when he succeeded his father in the earldom and entered theHouse of Lords. He was aLord of the BedchambertoGeorge IIIbetween1777 and 1783.The latter year he was sworn of thePrivyCounciland appointedCaptain of the Yeomen ofthe Guard[4]byWilliam Pitt the Younger.He retained this office until 1804, the last three years under the premiershipofHenryAddington. When Pitt resumed office in 1804, Aylesford wasmadeLord Steward of the Household.He continued in this office until his death in 1812, under successivelyLordGrenville, theDuke of PortlandandSpencer Perceval. Aylesford also held the honorary positionofHigh Steward of SuttonColdfieldfrom 1796 until his death. Apart from his political career LordAylesford was an artist of some repute in the British landscapetradition.Tate Britainhas50watercolours, drawings and prints by Finch in its collection.In 1795 anAlbum of Etchings by Lord Aylesford and Otherswaspublished.A. P. Oppe wrote an article giving somebackground and listing 85 of Aylesford\'s etchings titledThe FourthEarl of Aylesford.The Print Collector\'sQuarterly1924, Vol 11, p.263. Lord Aylesford was electeda Fellow of theRoyal Societyin 1773and was a trustee of theBritish Museumbetween 1787 and 1812.
