This RARE antique carved wooden walking cane has several unique features.
- the entire cane is carved in the shape of an umbrella, including the folded in flaps of an umbrella and the metal balls peeking out at the top.
- where an umbrella would have a band, the carving also has a band, "latched" by an arrow
- the carvings around the upper shaft are so smooth they feel like leather, but are actually all part of the wood
- the several carvings on the upper shaft include:
• the name MAURICE..
• what appears to be a double cross or cross of Lorraine
• another name? DAUCIN, with the N only being slanted.
The cane stands only 32" high, which, along with the umbrella shape, lead me to believe it is a ladies' cane. However, the name MAURICE carved at the top is a man's name. And then we have the double cross and arrow latch, which could indicate a fraternity organization ... or a sorority?
This cane is part of my father's antique cane collection and has always been one of my favorites. He would have purchased this cane from an antique dealer sometime between 1970 and 1980.
Based on the purchase time frame and everything depicted on the cane, I believe it is from the late 19th or early 20th century.
Take a close look at all pictures to fully see the cane's condition. The protective metal end cap is firmly attached to the cane.
Due to the fragile nature of antiques, I will be having UPS carefully pack and ship this cane at no additional charge to the buyer.
Please be aware that I am not a vendor, but simply a homeowner in the process of downsizing. I provide the best description of item and condition that I am able.
