EARLY & RARE AMERICAN FINE QUALITY / CONDITION

STERLING SILVER ENGRAVED SNUFF / TOBACCO BOX

By ALBERT COLE / NEW YORK / 1835 – 1875

This is an Antique, American, early to mid-19th Century, handmade sterling silver engraved snuff box;intended to keep snuff tobacco fresh and to maintain the tobacco\'s qualitiesand aroma. This snuff box is between 188 and 148 years old and remains in finecondition overall and would have been used at home or business as an eyeappealing tabletop snuff box in a rectangular shape with rounded corners. 33/16\" long x 2\" wide x 3/4\" tall. Weight is heavy for its sizeat 2.9 ounces or 83 grams. Albert Coles (b.1813 - d.1892) was an influential NewYork silversmith and jeweler between 1835 and 1875. The mainstay and focus ofhis business was silver flatware, so a snuff box would have been a custom madeto order piece. The heavy sterling silver material, elegant design, anddelicate hand engraving combined with the artistry and craftsmanship demonstratesthis was an expensive piece; intended for presentation by a Wealthy Gentlemanof Means. The fact this piece has a prominent center oval is hand engraved inthe Old English style with the F.O.C. to L.M.T. initials inside the escutcheonwith an ornate stylized center shield pattern with left and right splays of lineengraved leaf patterns with delicate feathered engraving surrounded by a doubleborder, demonstrates this was a presentation piece as was common for the periodamong elites.

The American Albert Cole small hallmarksare clearly stamped on the inside bottom lip; a circle with the American eagle,a diamond with the initials AC, and an oval with a man’s figure head, A C&Co, and the number 11. This box has all the characteristics of an early tomid-1899’s Victorian era piece with a slightly domed top and bottom, identical periodstyle escutcheon hand engraved escutcheons with an ornate stylized centershield pattern with left and right splays of delicate line engraved leafpatterns filled with exceptionally fine feathering engraving, surrounded by adouble border on the top and bottom, with the top bearing the presentationinitials; and the bottom center panel embellished with a stylized flower, andthin silver ribs to the top and base for better grasping. All 4 sides have thesame box link engraved pattern with v shaped accents and fine featherengraving. Above each panel is a ridged border with punch dot decoration. Thetop has a thin scalloped lip for easy opening. The back side has an early stylestandalone hinge mostly associated with the 1700’s, with 9 prongs: another indicationof a quality hand crafted box. The fit of the top and bottom seam is smooth allaround, showing exceptional craftsmanship. The inside was originally gold washed, with generous light gold coloration remaining. The inside bottom shows a patchof wear to the delicate gold wash that was obviously created by the ownertaking a “pinch” of snuff from the box bottom. There is no damage, repairs, oralterations. As is expected, there are normal handling marks and fine hard tosee surface scratches to the polished finish. Note there are a few scattered, hard to see minuscule pinprick marks on the top and bottom but can be seen mostlyfrom the inside of the top and bottom.

This piece has seen light period usageand appears to have been \"put up\" and stored properly, that atteststo the current fine condition overall of this piece. Overall, this early Americanmade piece is in exceptional condition for its extreme age, with fine attentionto detail. Use this fine box as a paperweight, desk accessory, decorative, jewelry, keepsake, trinket, tobacco, snuff or Tobacciana collection andconversation piece; and could still be used today for its original purpose asan elegant snuff box.
