RARE Patent Pending ~ ZEPHYR Staple Driving Machine 101A ~ HOTCHKISS 1938 Heller:
$621.37

A extremely rare, \"Patent Pending\" Zephyr Staple Driving Machine Model 101A. This sleek, streamlined, chrome with black hammerloid enamel stapler, was designed by Robert Heller for E. H. Hotchkiss Company in Norwalk, Connecticut, USA in the late 1930\'s.
Robert Heller submitted a patent application to the United States Patents Office for his Staple Driving Machine, design number 114,265, on Aug. 19, 1938. His patent was approved on Apr. 11, 1939, which could possibly date the production of this piece to a very short eight month time frame. For interest, I have included 2 images of scans that I downloaded from the United States Patents Office website. The first scan shows Heller\'s original patent application design drawings dated Aug. 19, 1938 and the second scan is in regards to a change in the original application, dated Dec. 10, 1938. What the second scan also shows is that Heller\'s design was approved and \"Patented Apr. 11, 1939.\" (as seen printed on the top left of scan)
As for this \"patent pending\" model, it does differs slightly in design to that of the later \"patented\" models, specifically in the style of a 2 position anvil plate, it has a more \"open\" bottom (less rubber) design style and the maker\'s impressed marks on bottom of piece, are placed differently and also state that it is a \"Patent Pending\" model. Like the later models, it has the red button slide rail, front loading release mechanism, which is fully functional and holds 210 standard size staples. It measures approximately 20.3 cm (8\") long by 7.6 cm (3\") high by 5 cm (2\") wide and weighs a hefty 602 g (1.3 lbs). The stapler has been tested and still works very well.
Although this stapler was manufactured about 85 years ago, surprisingly it has very minor condition issues. The only wear I could see is that it has some cracking/erosion of the rubber on the rear outer edge of the base. The chrome also has a very small amount of pitting and some light surfaces scratches. Overall, this \"Staple Driving Machine\" is a wonderful example of 1930\'s design and innovation, that would look amazing on the top shelf of any collection.
