Rare 16mm film vintage Charles Ray Eames Office COMMUNICATION PRIMER classic mod:
$299

.A seminal reel from the Charles and Ray Eames Film PRIMER.
This is one of their longer creative specials. Most of the long Eames films were made for specific exhibitions so lack the creative flourish that Eames fans long for. This film has it all in spades. Great narration, Elmer Bernstein back on the soundtrack, killer photography, thosse big close-ups, excellent graphics; if you are a fan, you know the score.
BEGINSOpens with a dictionary definition of communication.Broadest aspects.Clarification of workable theories of communication.Aspects of daily communication that are of concern to us.We are entering the era of communication.Claude Shannon's flow diagrams.Noise.Varies the initial message from the transmitter.Noise need not be sound. On a train, rail motion or bad light as you pass through a tunnel can stop you reading. This is noise.Static is noise.Deterioration of carbon print copies is noise, even though wholly visual.Telegraph: BUY or SELL.Great, bold graphic images on screen.BUY SELL can become BUY SELF and the message remains clear.Market The brain is the major force in spoken communication.A decoder.Noise can be in the transmitter or sound signal.'I love you' becomes 'I hate you'.Repetition can lead to redundancy.I love you. I love you. I love you. I love you. I love you. I love you. I love you. I love you. I love you. I love you. I love you. I love you. I love you. I love you.Circuitry: on/off.Brilliant images.Music. Writing. Smoke signals. Hand signals. All are the same.Painting. A signal transmittingInformation source - mind and experience of painterMessage - concept of a particular painting.Transmitter - his talent and technique.Signal - the painting itself.Receiver - all the eyes and nervous systems and previous conditionings of all those who have seen the painting.Destination - their minds, emotions, experience. But what is the noise?Quality of light. Colour of light. Prejudice of viewer. Etc.In any comms system, some level of decoding is needed, even with noise.Lighthouse code has no room for error. Lives are at stake.A wave breaking on a beach carries information from many, many miles away - but only if you know the code.Great wave images.Birds in flight.Communication keeps a society together, even in crowds of strangers. Just to navigate a public space requires much communication.Art, sculpture.Signals.Burnt offerings - the flame as transmitter in the communications channel is as old as time.Storm warning flags.Great shots of markings on a road. Sleek 1950s vehicles speed past.Symbols of communication. The role of the eye shape within logos.Morse code.Immense, graphic dots and dashes pass across the screen. The key is up or down. The current flows, ceases to flow or flows. It is stop or go.On or off.One or none.Go or no-go.Black or white.Half-tone reproduction in a magazine on screen as macro-sizing.Camera zooms out. The huge dots become smaller. Then reveal a child's face.Yellow, red, blue, black - colour printing.More macro-shots.A music box.Braille. Great computers.Man & machine.Machine & machine.Machine & man.The card is punched or not punched.Light passes or it doesn't.Binary.Sounds from a huge calculator.Frequencies as pulse. These ace electronic sounds are accompanied by great close ups of computer readouts - multiple dots and squares.Complex response systems and huge memories.Computers as brains. But the simplest act such as picking a flower requires many stop and go signals within the human. If the number of signals needed were turned into half-tone dots, the printed area would more than cover the earth's surface. As flowing as human activity may seem, it is the result of innumerable stop-go decisions within our body.Communicated at vast speed through the communication channel - the nervous system. The decision is the impulse of a single nerve fibre.A trigger process set off like an explosion. The hole in the tape. The dot in the half-tone.Painting again.Where a dot is placed or where a single line ends affects the message of the whole painting. The communication of the total message entails the responsibility of many, many decisions. Made again and again.Through a constant response system. Then we see an aircraft's cockpit.Shots of numerous switches, dials and buttons.A hand appears.Because a decision has been made.A paintbrush paints a simple black line on a white page.ENDSAnother Eames Office Classic.16mm. Colour. Sound. 800ft. NB: Has fade commensurate with age. In no way detracts from the enjoyment of this vintage reel. Please see images below for print quality. The freeze frame has been used for some images but the projector lamp dims when on freeze frame so the images in the photos will appear brighter when projected by you at speed. Also, any spots in the images are on my camera lens, these will not appear when you project the film. Grab this rare as hen's teeth gem while you can. Sold as is no returns.
