John Laird (June 14, 1805 - Oct. 29, 1874) was a British shipbuilder and one of the first to use iron in the construction of ships. He was the Managing Partner of William Laird & Son, and was a key figure in the development of the town of Birkenhead. He was born in Scotland and raised in Liverpool. In his professional capacity he realized that the techniques of bending iron plates and riveting them together to build ships were similar to the principles involved in making boilers. He built iron ships as early as the 1830's, 1840's, and 1850's, including many for the USA. Some were screw-propelled steamers, iron paddle steamers and anti-piracy gun boats. Dozens and dozens of ships produced.

PERHAPS THEIR MOST FAMOUS VESSEL BUILT WAS THE CONFEDERATE STATES RAIDER CSS ALABAMA, captained by the famous CSA Admiral Raphael Semmes, and the CSS Captain. Laird also built other famed Naval ram vessels for the Confederate States Navy, including El Toussoun and El Monastir and others. Even the Lincoln Administration had requested Laird to build armed iron clads for the Union in 1861. The British Government ostensibly was neutral, but many ships were built for the Confederates.

In 1829 Laird married Elizabeth Hurry, and in 1860 his 3 sons joined him in partnership in his shipbuilding business. In 1861 he retired from shipbuilding and served as the first Parliament member from the town of Birkenhead, from 1861-1874.

Nice bold autograph, "Yrs, John Laird". 4 page letter, with content on 2 sides of the first page. Ink and writing is very level and nice.

Very suitable letter for framing or as a display piece with your Civil War, Confederate, or Confederate Navy collection!!! And certainly would be a great addition to anything about the CSS ALABAMA or other CSA ships.
