Rare Antique Photographs from 1914 Indian Wars Movie, William Buffalo Bill Cody:
$54

For your consideration is this set of 4 very rare photographs from Buffalo Bill Cody's movie Indian Wars or (Indian Wars Refought)! I will have an incredible grouping of original Buffalo Bill and Wild West items. Many of these items descended in the family of Johnny Baker and then were purchased by me at sale. It is rare chance to own some authentic and candid photographs of a performer in the Wild West Show.

According to the AFI, William F Cody approached Secretary of War Lindley M Garrison and Secretary of the Interior Franklin K Lane about the making of this film, which was shot at the sites of the original battles between Sept 26 1913 and Nov 1 1913. Garrison supplied Cody with the necessary troops from the 12th US Cavalry and Lane authorized the participation of over 1000 Sioux Indians. Lieutenant General Nelson Appleton Miles was hired as a technical consultant as well as a cast member and made sure that the reenactments were as accurate as possible. The production, which boasted over 30,000 feet of film shot from the Bad Lands of South Dakota to the Black Hills of Wyoming, was plagued by blizzards and increasing costs, later requiring over 6 months of editing. The film was released theatrically in August 1914 but according to modern sources played only in Denver and New York because of pressure from the government (it shows Native Americans in a somewhat favorable light). It was used again in 1917 as part of The Adventures of Buffalo Bill, after Cody's death. Not much remains from the movie, and these photographs offer a small glimpse of this time.Shown in the photographs are a movie cameraman with Native Americans in the background. There is one showing General Miles looking at what appears to be the director Theodore Wharton. A photograph of a clearly elderly man who I presume may be Charles King or H.G. Sickles, both of who were advisors on the movie set and served at Wounded Knee. The other show two cowboys receiving direction from a cavalry officer. They measure about 3" by 5" and are very sharp. Mounted onto a black album. A important find documenting a piece of movie history.
