One of the Earliest, Most Contempory, Most Complete History Sets of the Civil This listing is FOR THE ENTIRE, COMPLETE 10 VOLUME SET of Putnam books. A great, rare set of especially nice, particularly early, contemporaryCIVIL WAR history books. It is a very famous, classic set, one of the earliest and most contemporary histories, with publication starting in 1861. Published by G.P. Putnam, and edited by Frank Moore.
Volume 1 has an introduction by the most famous orator of the day, Edward Everett. He was the man who gave the long, 2 hour oration at the dedication of the Gettysburg National Cemetary, prior to Lincoln\'s famous, brief Gettysburg Address.
This series was one of the most complete sets ever written, and one of the earliest!! Volume 1 was copyrighted in 1861, during the first year of the war, and published in 1862. In fact, 8 OF THE 10 VOLUMES IN THE SET WERE BOTH COPYRIGHTED AND PUBLISHED BEFORE THE WAR HAD ENDED IN 1865. The 10 volumes cover primarily early national military activities and history as well as significant related political history. THEY INCLUDE ALL THE EARLY BATTLES, BOTH EASTERN & WESTERN THEATRES, again as summarized in the detailed chapter descriptions at the start of each volume.
Specifically, the volumes were published as follow, indicating the type and period of content covered in each:
--entered into Congress-- --published--
Volume 1: 1861 1862
Volume 2: 1862 1862
Volume 3: 1862 1862
Volume 4: 1862 1862
Volume 5: 1862 1864
Volume 6 1863 1866

Loaded with great information and descriptions from the Civil War with an indescribable degree and variety of military exploits and detail on the subject. The content of each volume is outlined in the Table of Contents in each volume. I have shown the table of contents from Volume 5, as an example, but there is not enough room to show it for all 10 volumes!!!
Information is presented in a great and interesting text. Each of the 10 volumes contains more than 600 pages, 12 steel engravings, and various maps, tables, and other significant and interesting information. Therefore, the SET IN TOTAL INCLUDES OVER 6000 PAGES OF INFORMATION AND 120+ STEEL ENGRAVINGS/PORTRAITS OF GENERALS, ETC.

The \"Supplemental Volume\" contains important official reports, narratives, and state papers, both Federal & Rebel, which were unavailable during the war.
This is a very unusual, HUGE, AND VERY EARLY set on a fascinating subject, and it is loaded with a great deal of fascinating early information. IT WOULD MAKE A GREAT CONTEMPORARY REFERENCE SET ON THE CIVIL WAR OR JUST GREAT READING.Lots of details on a variety of military and battle details AS THEY HAPPENED.
Hard cover. Each volume has a classy early cover with a GOLD patriotic eagle motif, and binding in excellent condition. Pages are excellent for the age, with only minor foxxing in a couple of the volumes. Excellent condition overall for something 160+ YEARS OLD!!! This is the best looking set I have seen.
