Life Guards Cuirassier Her Majesty Empress Maria Feodorovna Regiment ( Blue or Gatchina Cuirassiers ) is a Life Guards formation ( cuirassier regiment ) of the Russian Imperial Army .

During its existence, repeatedly, in accordance with the tradition of Russian military affairs of that period of time, naming regiments by commander and type of weapon (service), changed names (see organization).

Formed in 1704 under the name Johann Daneel Portes Dragoon Regiment .

Since 1708 - Nevsky Dragoon Regiment ; in 1733 renamed Life Cuirassier ; in 1796, Empress Maria Feodorovna was appointed chief of the regiment .

In 1790, during the Russian-Turkish War , 1787-1791, the Life Cuirassier Regiment, as well as two more cuirassier regiments ( Kazan and?) and two carabinieri regiments, participated in the experiment, during the ongoing military reform , under the leadership of General chief of His Serene Highness Prince G. A. Potemkin , to determine the optimal organization of formations of the Russian army of that period, at the theater of war , they were all united as part of the Life Cuirassier Regiment. The experiment continued from April 8, 1790 to February 8, 1792, during which it became clear that commanding such a cumbersome formation was difficult and had considerable difficulties, and the experiment was stopped, the regiments were returned to their previous state.
