The Tick Ashcan Edition #1 NEC 1988 Gold Cover CGC 9.4 White Pages SUPER RARE:

Item Description

ALL reasonable offers will be considered.

This is the SUPER RARE,The Tick Ashcan Edition #1, published by New England Comics, The Golden Cover. In 1988 a group of this book was created and sent to Comic Book stores to discover their market viability. At the time, I believe this book was the equivalent of any Indy comic book sitting on some isolated artist’s table in the Artists Alley section at the back of any random Comic Book Convention building. Unbeknownst to the comic book store owner receiving the book, The Tick would become a cultural phenomenon in just a few years. This would explain the rarity of this book.

Rarity

The first appearance of The Tick is in the New England Comics Newsletter issue #14. There are 21 copies of this newsletter on the CGC census. The Tick Ashcan Edition #1 from 1988 is the first comic book appearance of The Tick, and THERE ARE ONLY 2 COPIES ON THE CGC CENSUS. This book is significantly rarer than the first appearance and it has the extra caveat of being a comic book, not a newsletter. Both copies are graded 9.4. One copy is signed, the other copy is unsigned. The unsigned copy is this book. It has been reported that only 100 copies were ever created.

On a monthly basis Tick books, CDs, and merchandise have been selling on regularly for years. In the 90s there was an award-winning Tick cartoon show that lasted 3 seasons, that show continues to aire in syndication. Wizard magazine ranked The Tick #16 on its Top 100 Greatest Cartoons. In January 2009, IGN ranked The Tick #6 on its Top 100 Animated Series list. IGN went on to regard it as "the first great lampooning of the superhero genre" and compared the series to Mel Brooks and Monty Python. There has been 2 live action TV shows. The first show aired in the early 2000s for 9 episodes. The second show produced 2 seasons.

The Price

There is no documented sale of this book on the open market. As such, the sale of this book will determine its current value. Due to the rarity, the CGC high grade, and the cultural relevance of the Tick character, I am posting an asking price of 35K for this book. I compare this book to the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 1986 Turtlemania Special #1, Metropolis Comics published, Gold cover book. There are currently 9 copies on the CGC census. Both The Tick Ashcan and the Turtlemania Special were created in the 80s. In addition, neither book is the first appearance of the characters. The qualified CGC 9.6 Turtlemania Special #1 book sold for 66K in 2022. The qualified CGC 9.2Turtlemania Special #1 book sold for 72K in 2021. Based on these amounts, the high grade of the book, the rarity of the book, and finally the relative popularity comparison of the Tick compared to the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, I am proposing 35K as a price.

All reasonable offers will be considered. Please respond with any questions you may have.
