The ringing of bells has always provided a means of drawing attention to a particular event that is about to take place. Using this method to notify the family that dinner is about to be served did the same.History of Dinner BellsAs far back as the Bible writings in Exodus--written circa 1440 B.C.--dinner bells have been mentioned as a way of marking the hour of dinner.
What Time is is?Constantine of Rome first erected a church bell in early 300 A.D. This bell rang at 6 a.m. and again at 6 p.m. to signify the time of day. The sound of the bell could be heard for miles and became associated with breakfast and dinnertime.
The Bell EvolvesMedieval times during the fifth century were very superstitious. Residents hung bells outside their doors, and passing neighbors would ring the bels to chase away spirits. This is thought to have been the origin of the dinner bell.
Dinner Bell comes to AustraliaDinner bells that were used in Southern France in the 16th century were brought to Australia, where settlers continued the tradition of marking 6 p.m. as dinnertime. Made of heavy cast iron that hung from a post with a metal ringer inside, this bell was positioned just outside the kitchen door.
Bells as a SymbolAlthough the necessity of bells is no longer relevant, they are still used and respected today as a symbol of recognition and freedom. The dinner bell represented the importance of the gathering of family and friends, and it still holds this historical symbol.
