Vintage 1940’s-1950’s, Raadvad Bread Slicer, in excellent condition. Beautiful patina!
For sale is a beautiful, dark green, vintage bread slicer, with the original paint. It is in excellent condition with a beautiful patina. It was made by the Raadvad Company, a company founded in the mid 1640’s in Copenhagen, Denmark. In the late 1700’s, the company began manufacturing high quality knives and other kitchen equipment. In the late 1800’s, the Raadvad Company opened an inn to help serve the people who were coming to visit the factory and the beautiful countryside. The restaurant was serving lunches to guests who included members of the royal family. Anyone who has ever worked a busy lunch service in a place that serves delicious bread and sandwiches knows that keeping up with the slicing can be difficult, especially since pre-sliced bread was still decades away. The Raadvad Company, being a knife company at the time, designed a solution: the bread slicer or bread guillotine was born. It was a handy gadget with a V-shaped wooden rest for a loaf of bread, and an arm with a specially designed blade for effectively removing uniform slices. The operation was simple because the machine is made of solid cast iron with a steel blade, and even better, there was no need to get your fingers anywhere in the way of the slicing operation. Great item in excellent condition and beautiful color and patina. I found lots of fascinating history about this interesting company that’s been around since the mid 1640’s.
