History

On December 20, 1955, the year-long Free World’s Fair of Peace and Confraternity was inaugurated in Ciudad Trujillo in commemoration of the twenty-fifth anniversary of dictator Rafael L. Trujillo’s rise to power. The fair featured perfor- mances, parades, art exhibits, and trade shows highlighting the artistic, commercial, and military feats achieved during the regime (1930-1961). This essay explores how the fair constructed the idea of a Dominican nation by defining a cultural and spatial geography that was described by a solid partition in the geopolitical border with Haiti, and a fluid marine threshold for tourists along the coastline. The fair also shaped the idea of the nation by defining modernity in terms of a hierarchical relationship between the city and the colonial quarters, establishing viewing parameters and regimenting the gaze with a walking tour that took visitors on a trek from the old colonial ruins to the modern fairgrounds.
