For sale is a Vintage Primitive Navajo Artist made Goat/Sheep/mountain goat spirit animal figure with Real animal Fur & real Horns. The facial structure of the animal is pointy and adds an unusual folky touch to the piece. Two bone buttons are used for its eyes.
It is most likely made by Ray Growler whose art work appears at Smithsonian American Art Museum ( />
The way Ray Growler tells the story he was the first artist to begin making sheep. He says he was working on his parent's house and needed some sawhorses. As he was out in the yard building them, a few sheep were milling about. Ray says he looked up from the sawhorse to a sheep and suddenly got the idea of putting the two together. His mother had a sheep pelt curing on the clothesline and Ray took it and secured it to the sawhorse. "It looked so good I took it to (a nearby trading post), and the trader said, 'great!', and put me to work."
It measures approximately 22” tall, 21” long, and 12” wide. It is in good condition. Only issue is that the hide for the front left leg is split. But since the hide naturally curls, it is hardly noticeable. See the last photo for detail. Other than that, it is perfect! Display beautifully at an antique primitive/ Native American art theme home!
