W. Craig 1858 INDIGO & IVORY JACQUARD COVERLET DOUBLE WOVEN FLORA:
$2200.00

VINTAGE W. CRAIG JACQUARD COVERLETTE DATED 1858 Offered for your consideration is true vintage "pioneer art" jacquard coverlet. This item was purchased by the seller in my possession for the past 24 years. This piece was made by the prodigious Craig family of weavers based in Greensburg, Indiana. This particular coverlet was probably made by William Craig Jr. (1824-1880) whose father immigrated from Scotland in the early 1800s. Constructed of their trademark double-cloth woven in white and blue wool and cotton using the popular jacquard weaving method of the time. The coverlet measures 72x80". This piece was loomed in two lengths then sewn together. The selvedge is completely intact with fringe is in good condition. The motif of this item is floral contained in dentition geometric patterns. Classic pokka dot carries all sides of the coverlet. Overall condition is above average without stains, rips or major repairs. There are areas of missing blue wool of unknown origin but likely moth damage. See pics for detailed inspection. Interestingly, this piece was found in two pieces in completely separate areas while shopping in a local antique store. Talk about a lucky day! I turned this over to a member of the Denver Quilting Society who did an excellent job reuniting the halves to their original condition. There is an interesting small (1") printed on cloth name (Stark) held by a lead staple on one corner. Makes you wonder if this was the original owner? One's imagination can easily take you to a time of prairie scooners making there way on the Santa Fe Trail accounting for the arrival of this lovely item to New Mexico.
