WWI WWII GB ANZAC British Royal Army Uniform 3 Buttons Mandatory Palestine :
$48.30

Up for sale are 3 (three) British Royal Army uniform buttons.

I believe these buttons were manufactured in the late 19th century or in the first half of the 20th century.

The buttons were found in the early 1980’s by me in the sand dunes of Ashdod (38 km north of Gaza; 33 km south of Tel-Aviv).

So, how did these buttons find their way to the dune sands of Ashdod?

It is hard to believe that the buttons appeared in the region prior WWI.

So the first possibility is that the button could have been lost in the area where they were found is only when the Egyptian Expeditionary Force under the command of General Edmund Allenby (later on he was promoted to the rank of Field Marshal) marched from Egypt into Ottoman Palestine, and after the Third Gaza Battle in 1917, when the “road” along the coast line was opened towards Jaffa.

The second possibility is during the Mandate (1920-1948).

Mainly British troops from the United Kingdom.

The third possibility is during the Israel War of Independence 1948-1949 (The First Arab–Israeli War).

In those days the IDF or pre-IDF forces used all and any arms, ammunition, and uniforms of any possible source, including British.

So, who might be the soldiers that lost these buttons (hopefully that’s all they lost). Were they Holocaust survivors or Jewish boys who could of come from any country in the World or were they from theUK, West Indies, India, Hong-Kong, Singapore or ANZACs as these were the nationalities that where posted in the Middle East.

We will never know the answer, but these past events are part of our common heritage and history.

Boys and girls this is the story of “The British Royal Army 3 Buttons in the Holy Land”.

British manufacturers backmarks:

(1) Buttons Limited * Birmingham *;

(2) Smith & Wright Ltd * B\'ham * (Birmingham);

(3) No backmarks at all (surprising, ha?!).

Condition:

The buttons are in perfect condition, covered with beautiful desert patina after being baked in the Middle Eastern sun for decades. I have never cleaned or polished these buttons.

Note:

In the early 1980’s I placed these buttons on a ring (on which appears an unidentified mark) that I found in the same general area that I found the buttons, and since then they are “living together” on this ring at my home.

PLEASE SEEPICTURES TO JUDGE CONDITION BEFORE BUYING!
