Antique pottery in good taste – harmic.littleAn excellent condition early saltglazed stoneware Bellamine jug with a fine \'tiger\' glaze and applied \'angry\' bearded face mask; Germany, probably Frechen, circa 1600 - 1650. This beautiful Bellarmine has some typical chipping around the foot and a shrinkage line in the lip (not damage). Actually, it is in great condition considering so many Bellarmines offered for sale have been restored.  This one has no restoration and is in original untouched fantastic condition - a great display, collector’s, or dealer’s item. These fabulous bottles were used to transport and dispense wine and beer and the humorous applied masks which are supposed to represent Cardinal Bellarmine, must have been a familiar sight in almost every tavern in any large town or city in Europe and also in America. This stoneware jug is about 9 inches tall. It is is beautifully potted with a cordoned neck. There is an applied \'angry\' mask just below the rim and an applied oval rosette motif on the belly. The salt glaze gives a really beautiful coloration from orange to a stunning grey-brown. It has a fabulous, abstract, animated quality. An almost identical Bellarmine with a \'sad\' or \'reflective\' mask was discovered in Hampton, Virginia and can be seen in a beautiful photograph in Janine Skerry and Suzanne Hood\'s fine book Salt-Glazed Stoneware in Early America (Williamsburg, 2009), p. 19, fig. 9. For interesting remarks on the ten-petal rosette medallion see ioffer., pp. 18-20.  Another fragment with an identical medallion has been found in Anne Arundel County, Maryland (ioffer., p. 18). The bottle is in superb shape, no cracks or restoration and as we said, just the usual chips around the foot that can be clearly seen in the photographs supplied. Thanks for offerding on this great early Bellarmine and good luck!Insurance is included with shipping. Absolutely guaranteed authentic.
