Antique glass in good taste – harmic.littleAn attractive English black glass wine bottle of typical mid-eighteenth century form with a moderate kick-up base and sand pontil mark; circa 1750. This handsome bottle is approximately 10 inches in height. It has a relatively short neck in relation to the body which suggestsa date around the middle of the eighteenth century. It has a certain amount of surface iridescence but the general condition is good with a little surface scratching but no significant chips and no cracks or restoration (see the detailed photographs).Bottles of this type mark the evolution of the English wine bottle from the clumsy tavern \'onion\' and \'mallet\' formsinto the fully evolved \'cylinder\' into which wine could be decanted and laid in racks in a gentleman\'s cellar. Thismethod of keeping better wine for longer periods of time began to take hold in England from about 1750 and accompanied the rise of the English country house with its vast cellar space for storing wine.This would make an ideal starter bottle if you are interested in starting a collection of early wine bottles, or a great display item.Good luck and thanks for offerding with harmic.little!
