Antique pottery in good taste – harmic.littleA LARGE AND SUPERBLY DECORATED WESTERWALD STONEWARE BULBOUS TAVERN JUG WITH A FINE CENTRAL \'GR\' MEDALLION SURROUNDED BY CHECKER AND OTHER PATTERNS; THE COLLECTOR\'S NUMBER \'39\' IN YELLOW ON THE UNDERSIDE OF THE BASE; GERMANY, WESTERWALD REGION, circa 1720 - 1740. We are pleased to be able to offer our specialist collectors and dealers this wonderfully large decorated Westerwald stoneware GR tavern jug. The jug is of tall bulbous form with a reeded neck washed in manganese. The frontal GR medallion is molded in the form of a large crown above the GR monogram with bird \'supporters\' on either side in heraldic fashion, and an angel or putto head below. All along the waistband of the jug is sinuous incised compressed scrolling ribbon. On either side of this are striking checker bands and beyond these are small plants with incised circular ‘flowers\'.  The jug has no capacity mark incised on the shoulder or near the handle (see the photographs) but it measures approximately 9 3/4 inches in height so would have had a capacity mark of \'2\' or \'3\' (2-3 quarts).  These superbly crafted attractive tavern jugs and mugs were made in large numbers during the late-seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries. They were exported to England from the Westerwald region of Germany, from where many of them made their way on to the American colonies. Quite a number of these beautiful vessels have been excavated on east coast archaeological sites. They would have been used predominantly as robust tavern storage and drinking vessels for beer and wine. The neck of the jug is decorated with multiple grooves washed with manganese purple under the glaze. The top of the handle has a hole pierced in the clay to enable a pewter lid to be fitted. This would keep out flies and dust from the beer inside. These fabulous stoneware mugs and jugs represented a considerable advance in the hygiene of drinkers over the old porous earthenware vessels they superseded - they could be cleaned with relative ease and they did not easily chip or crack. The unusual pattern and quality of manufacture compensate for the damage as follows: A hairline crack to the lower portion of the handle; two large V shaped pieces of the reeded neck have been broken out and restuck; three smaller pieces have been restuck within the larger V shaped repairs together with two spots of filler have been applied on the inside of the neck.  We think this would be an fantastic purchase for a collector looking for an unusual specimen, or for anyone looking to build a representative collection of these handsome GR tavern jugs, or a superb acquisition for any dealer looking to upgrade their inventory for a special show.  Please come and visit harmic.little again for the very best in quality antiques and outstanding service.    Insurance is included with shipping.
