A stunningly beautiful saltglazed stoneware tavern jug decorated with a variety of relief strips glazed with an almost solid cobalt blue background and with brownish-manganese; Westerwald region, circa 1700.
The body is covered with vertical relief-decorated ornamental strips which include stylized flower petals, leavesand tiny raised roundels. The body is typically glazed in blue and manganese. What is fascinating about this piece is that the manganese has fired to a (not glossy) brownish color instead of the usual blackberry color of manganese. This, and some aspects of the modeling make me think that the mug may have beenmade in another stoneware manufacturing center near Westerwald like Hilgert or Grenzau. The cobalt blue color isrich andbright.
The jug is 8 3/8 inches tall with a base diameter of 3 1/2 inches. The condition of the jug is absolutely FABULOUS (see the photos provided) and there is no damage whatsoever - no chips, no cracks and no restoration. This is a fabulous addition to any collection or dealer’s inventory and a great display piece to accompany an item of period furniture.
Good luck with your offer - don\'t miss this one in the final seconds!
