A Rare GERMAN SALTGLAZED STONEWARE LIDDED JUG of WESTERWALD type, DATED 1696 :
$405.00

A very rare dated Westerwald saltglazed stoneware jug ofunusualform with vertical strip decoration and impressed with little \'sun\'motifs; the pewter lidinscribed A.M.O.A. and the date 1696; Westerwald (or possibly Raeren), circa 1696.

I don\'t ever recall seeing this particular type of vertical strip decoration on a Westerwald jug before. As an additional bonus there is a date on the lid - 1696 - which I would say was definitely on or very close to the date when the jug was originally made. Also very unusual is the fact that the cobalt blue and manganese glazes appear to have been applied with a brush rather than a powder. This could point to a provenance other than Westerwald, maybe Raeren or some other region making this type of ware.

The jug is approximately 7 3/4 inches tall to the top of the thumb lift. It is of bulbous form with strips that may have been applied to the body individually or incised. The only other decoration consists of large and small impressed \'suns\' with little groups of three in rectangles around the base. The pewter lid is inscribed with theinitials \'A.M.O.A.\'which could possibly commemorate a marriage (the outside letters being the couple\'s joint surname and the \'M\' and \'O\' their Christian names). The date 1696, which corresponds to William III of England, is a great early date. However, although it is close to the date the jug was made, itcould alsocommemorate the date of the marriage or other event implied in the letters on the lid.

The condition is excellent for a piece over 300 years old. There is a horizontal hairline that runs part way around the top half of the body. There is a vertical hairline starting 2 inches from the mouth of the jug running downward through the body into the base ending in a Y shaped spider crack. There is a chip on the rim and there are two chips on the edge of the base. There is also a crack in the pewter lid where the hinge meets theflat lid. These imperfections can be seen in the photographs provided.

This is a very rare and interesting Westerwald jug and a must-have item of you are looking to create a chronological sequence of pieces. Dated 17th century items are rare at the best of times and we are sure you will like this fantastic example. Good luck and thanks for offerding with harmic.little.
