Antique pottery in good taste – harmic.littleA beautiful 17th century German saltglazed stoneware beer or wine jug of unusually small size with a relief molded \'Cardinal Bellarmine\' face mask just below the pouring lip; the upper part glazed with a wonderful rich \'tiger\' glaze; probably Frechen, circa 1600. Frechen stoneware bottles and jugs were shipped in vast quantities from Cologne to Amsterdam and Dordrecht, and then to England. It is estimated that by 1600, at least 100,000 pieces of German stoneware were imported annually from Holland to Britain, when the population of London was only 200,000. This Bellarmine was found in London.  These wonderful little Bellarmine or Bartman (German for bearded man)  jugs or bottles are scarce and ones with a beautiful glaze like this even scarcer. They were used to transport beer and wine and would have had a cork or bung secured with cord or wire tie (this was probably the function of the turned rings around the neck). This Bellarmine is just 6 3/8 inches tall, which is considerably smaller than more commonly found Bellarmine jugs. It is superbly potted with an applied face mask of \'dignified\' type. The upper part has a wonderful mottled glaze caused by the atomizing of the iron rich slip when salt was thrown into the very high temperature kiln. This accidental effect is just wonderful and it\'s what divides a desirable Bellarmine from an ordinary one. The bottle is generally in great condition. However there is a small restored hole about 1/2\" in diameter in the side of the jug that can just about be distinguished in photograph #3 in the photo sequence. The restoration is very well done and the jug needs to be examined carefully to find the repair. We hope you like this wonderful little Bellarmine as much as we do -thank you for offerding!Insurance is included with shipping. Absolutely guaranteed authentic.
