AMAZING LARGE 15\" CHINESE 19C DEEP CARVED RED BLACK CINNABAR LACQUER TRAY PLAQUE For Sale

I am very pleased to offer here on this large mid 19c Chinese deeply carved cinnabar lacquer tray or wall plaque executed in both red and black lacquer applied over a wood body. This fine tray was produced in Canton, China sometime between c1850 and c1870 destined for the export market and has the most amazing story poems and sheer quality of workmanship and details you will find. First of all the red lacquer is of the very fine quality and is always tough for me to capture as it turns out a bit bright however the color is of the finer quality red lacquer and is even a bit darker than the 2nd and 3rd photos and has a black lacquer ground in several geometric designs which is to depict water. There are three different areas of this tray as far as the scenes and the one to the top left shows several scholars and a female steering a tree boat looking onto land with a detailed bird flying above. The right side shows the God of wisdom and his staff along with two young attendants holding scrolls along side a deer with a large group of rockery having a opening with a double door and below the tree boat is a floating lotus leaf with four figures holding and carrying objects also heading to the land. There are also several small trees, a meandering large pine, boulders and rockery with the scenes being framed by a single thick bordered edge and the sides flare up and outward showing the four inner corners carved with central lotus flowers surrounded by a dense field of scrolling leaves and inbetween each corner is a shaped reserve of red flower branches on a black ground which the reverse of the flared sides show a continuous design like the corners on the front. The tray can be hung on the wall or set on a table as the tray sits on four corner feet with the underside finished in black high sheen lacquer. I am very impressed with this tray and recommend it to any serious collector. Condition is excellent with the only flaw to the front is a tiny chip off the bottom staff pole and the outside corners look to be touched up and just the black lacquer to the underside has some tiny raised bumps but hardly worth mentioning as this is truly a magnificent cinnabar object.
