A surveyor / Gunter chain 22 yards with all the links intact and with nice brass handles and 10 individual brass tally tags; Circa 1890.We are pleased to be able to off this early land surveyor’s chain. It consists of 100 individual links connected by iron rings, 10 brass tally tags (every 10 links) - each shaped to indicate partial chain measurements, and two brass handles. The chain measures 66 feet in length which equals 4 ‘poles’. The 66 foot chains are also called ‘Gunter’s chains’. Edwin Gunter of England initiated its common use for measuring land boundaries in the early 1600s. Land survey records in the American colonies were also recorded in ‘chains’. 1 chain x 10 chains = 1 acre. One mile = 80 chains. The use of the 66 foot chain was confined chiefly for land surveying because of its connection with the acre. This surveyor / Gunter chain has no maker’s marks so it is very difficult to accurately date. It is also impossible to say if it was originally made in England or America. It is completely genuine and in untouched condition. The rust is on the surface and the links are not pitted so it would clean up easily if so desired. It has attractive solid brass handles that would polish up really well and individual brass ‘finger / hand-shaped\' tally tags that would also look great with a good clean. We are selling this historically fascinating Gunter chain WITHOUT RESERVE - so good luck if you are a collector or surveyor. Absolutely guaranteed authentic.
