Lovely piece of early advertising with a great folk art quality to it. This unsigned trade sign is in the profile of a percussion cap pistol dating from the early to mid 19th century.  Piece was found in New York State though the style of the gun resembles those made and sold in both America as well as England and France.   The piece itself would have been hung outside a building to advertise the services of a gunsmith/gun seller, or in the interior of an early store to direct customers to the gun counter.

    Judging by the condition of this piece which is very good; this was likely an interior sign or hung outside of a shop where a roof hung over the piece.   There is age signs and some weathering, but exterior signs rapidly deteriorate and   this example still retains much of the detail the original craftsperson did when carving it.  Note the attention to detail on the checkered grips of the gun, the decoration on which would have been a lock (on an actual gun) and the percussion handle.

Underside of the trigger has an area where at some point someone reinforced the elements of the trigger mechanism with a metal screw.

Top side of the sign has two loop forged iron hangers that would have been suspended from a chain or sign bracket.

Surface is dry, original paint is intact with some flaking at areas.  There is an old loss to the area of wood on the lock, may have happened during construction as there is paint over it.   Looks to have been primed with gesso prior to the application of the original paint.  From years of cleaning some of the aforementioned gesso has come to the surface of the paint; this creating a lovely apperance and patina.  We have not attempted to \"clean\" the surface of the piece, nor do wish to.  It looks remarkable in it\'s current state.

From age there is some slight wear around edges, etc. Carved out of a  slightly lighter wood, looks to be pine or poplar, though it still has some \'heft\', holding it.    Again a very good overall example.

Measures a stunning size of 37\" in length and 17\" from the top of the percussion cap the end of the wooden stock, stock measures 3\" wide.  Great dimensional presentation.

Just a super example of a period 19th Century Trade sign that would make an amazing addition to any folk art collection displayed in a home.  Would look marvelous displayed from a ceiling as a piece of folk art on its own, or as a signage to a collector of period firearms.
