Antique Brass Ross Portrait Petzval Lens, 1840s, Rare. F3 Wet Plate and/or Dag.:
$573.19

Andrew Ross was one of the earliest lens makers for the new science, in 1939, of Photography. He was already an established scientific and optical maker some years before its invention, and made a large lens for Mr.H.Collen for his experiments, before Daguerre and Fox Talbot. He later made lenses for Fox Talbot. When Petzval designed his fast portrait lens for the first metal Daguerreotype Voigtlander camera, Ross was one of the first to start producing this design for sale in Britain and all over the world. The serial number on this lens suggests it was made in the early 1840s, at the dawn of photography. As Dr. Neill Wright says in the Lens Collector\'s Vade Mecum, most companies began their serial numbering at anywhere between 100 and a 1000, so this one of 1493 could be around 1844. This is just a guess. You will see that the lens was re-sold later by Watson & Sons of London. The original lacquer is present on much of the lens, except where you can see the area around the front of the lens hood, which would have been worn away by the repeated use of a lens cap, to make exposures. The glass after about 180 years is not perfect but in good condition. Some light scratches, and very tiny chips, which do not show up in photographs. These lenses were very expensive when new, and would have been looked after carefully, and used for many, many years, for wet plate, daguerreotypes, and even paper negatives. The retaining ring is present, the rack and pinion focusing works, and this rare lens would grace any collection, or be useable for any photographic process.I estimate the focal length to be about 7.00 inches, and the aperture about F3.8.Please feel free to ask any questions you have before bissing.Shipping will vary from one country to another, and depend on which service you choose.I must send by tracked post or courier.
