ANTIQUE IRON PONTIL GRASS GREEN APPLIED TOP
EARLY AMERICAN DEMIJOHN OR CARBOY
You are offerding on a beautiful early American half gallon size iron pontil DEMIJOHN OR CARBOY utility bottle. Dating between 1845-1860, this bottle stands 9-1/2” tall by 4-1/4\" diameter. It is blown in mold and has a crude slightly drippy applied tapered top, large cylindrical shaped body, crude, wavy irregular glass surfaces and a large, deep iron pontil in the center of the base.
As name brand products become more expensive, they are increasingly replaced by generics. There was a time when name brands were the exception rather than the rule. For centuries, commercial products were put up in generic containers. Rather than products being marketed in individual packages, it was more economical to sell goods in bulk and let merchants parcel them out. In a period when dry goods were sold in barrels and boxes, demijohns and carboys were the generic bulk containers for items which could not be transported or preserved in wood. Demijohns were the storage vessel of choice for the wine and spirit merchants.
This bottle in in outstanding condition with just a simple, small shallow open bubble on the underside of the heel edge and a little light internal haze, otherwise fine. You will receive the exact bottle shown in the sale if you are the successful buyer. Buyer pays $14.79 priority postage with packaging and prompt, secure shipping.
