Sewing Pattern for Lovely Formal 1912 Edwardian/Titanic Era Blouse in 4 Sizes ~ Small to XLarge
Exclusively from the Fashion Archaeologist

Another rare treasure in our line of \'Edwardian Rose\' antique patterns, this is pattern #1912-A-009,for an elegant late Edwardian fancy silk blouse, developed from aFrench design of early 1912, butdraftedin a multi-size format (see chart below). The pattern includes detailedsewing instructions in English. See all photos by scrolling down in the listing description!

Please note that this listing is for a sewing pattern only, not the finished blouse(s) or other items used for display in the photos.

However, the patterns for the Skirt and Jacket(patterns #1912-A-064 & 1912-A-005)shown in the photos are available in our store.

Details: A striking late Edwardian formal blouse in the typical “pigeon-breasted” style of the era, with elbow-length sleeves, and contrast “faux lapel” trim (same trim on the yoke and sleeves) edged with a second colour of piping. The blouse has a high collar and yoke, both in lace.

In 1912 this type of blouse would be worn with a walking suit for a dressy daytime event, for visiting, or for an informal dinner with a wool, linen, or silk skirt. The blouse has decorative little “peplums” at the back. It can be worn either tucked into, or over, an Edwardian skirt.

Silk is the fabric of choice for this blouse, although a lightweight linen or fine woolcould also be used, which would make it a less formal garment. We’ve shown photos of the blouse made in a coral-pink lightweight silk jacquard, with silk taffeta trim and cherry-red silk satin piping, as well as in a green silk jacquard. We\'ve also shown the blouse with our Skirt pattern #1912-A-064 and our \'Directoire\' Jacket pattern #1912-A-005. We think this blouse works especially well with the \'Directoire\' jacket.

Skill level for this pattern(3.5/5) Moderately advanced. This pattern is best for someone with solid intermediate to somewhat advanced sewing skills, as careful cutting and precision sewing are required. Construction can be made simpler by omitting the decorative piping, but the piping adds to the antique appeal. Detailed sewing instructions are included to take you step-by-step through the process of creating this lovely blouse.

Recommended Fabrics:Lightweight, soft but slightly crisp silks are best, such as lightweightjacquards orshantung. Handkerchief linens or lightweight cotton jacquards could alsobe used. For a silk blouse, taffeta works best for the contrast trim sections, with silk satin for the piping. Evenly checked or patterned fabrics aresuitable, but diagonals or larger printed designs are not.A charming variation of this blouse for summer wearwould be in pastel-coloured handkerchief linenwith solid white linen trim and white lace.

Our \'Edwardian Rose\' Patterns:Like all our patterns, this one is professionally printedon sturdy 20lb paper. It includes detailed cutting and sewing instructions in English, with measurements in inches and centimetres, a suggested fabric and notions list, as well as a copy of the antique fashion sketch. The pattern comes in handy resealable plastic envelope. We take these patterns from the \"bare bones\" original antique patterns (usually from French sources), re-draw, correct, and clarify the outlines, assemble the pattern piece(s)onto one sheet, add helpfulmarkings and notations, then write complete, step-by-step Englishinstructions. If you have ever tried to sew from an original antique pattern, you\'ll know they can be a challenge at best and mystifying at worst, with few (if any) sewing instructions. We\'ve takenthehard work out of interpreting these fashions to make them accessible for modern sewing. To see what sets our \'Edwardian Rose\' patterns apart from other antique patterns, click on the link to \"Store Pages\" on our store home page. The only thing that isnotincluded is a pattern layout sketch. This is because fabric widths can vary considerably, giving many possible layouts for one pattern. These would be very time-consuming to anticipate and draw out, and would unduly increase the cost of developing our patterns. We therefore suggest that you do a test layoutbased on the width of your chosen fabric. Otherwise, all the information you will need to complete the garment is included.

Size: This is a ladies’ multi-size pattern– see details below. There is some flexibility and overlap in the sizing, especially through the waist. The fit through the waist can be easily altered by adjusting the gathering at the waistline before sewing on the waistband.

The bust and upper arm (maximum) measurements are the most important considerations for fit.Guidelines are given in the pattern instructions for making basic size adjustments, although due to the unique cut-in-one design of this blouse, major size alterations are not possible without re-designing the pattern.
