Multi-Size Sewing Pattern for Authentic 1912 Edwardian/Titanic Era Fancy Taffeta Skirt

Exclusively from the Fashion Archaeologist -

\"What Rose Really Wore\"

Another rare treasure from The Fashion Archaeologist! Here is a sewing pattern for abeautiful rustling taffeta skirt -- exactly as it would have been worn in 1912 --developed from an original design published in a French fashion magazine in early 1912, butdraftedin a multi-size format (seesize chartbelow).Inearly1912taffeta was all the rage for fashionable women\'s garments, and this one, withits lovely detail of ruched bands, would have been the height of style. Please note: This listing is for the sewing pattern only, not the finished skirt.

Click on the photos to see close-up details. A photo of the original antique French sketch from which this skirt pattern was developed is also shown.

NOTE:the skirt is pictured with an Edwardian blouse that is not included in this listing, but the pattern for the blouse is available for sale separately in our store.

In 1912 this skirt would have been worn as part of a dressy tailored costume or as an informal dinner ensemble with ablouse of linen, batiste or silk. Make this skirt from silk taffeta (as shown in the photos)and make a lovelyembroidered blouse to wear with it (see our store for the pattern) -- for a perfect antique ensemble for a dinner party.

This skirt type was transitionalfrom the very plain, columnar styles of 1911 and the more draped and \"puffy\" styles of 1913 and 1914. It introduced a new silhouette that was fairly straight at the front but quite full, almost bustle-like in the back. The most interesting feature of this design is the ruched silk band decoration that encircles the skirt in 4 graduated widths below the knee, creating a beautiful 3-dimensional effect and adding weight and body to the lower portion of the skirt. This decorative concept had been used before on taffeta skirts -- about 100 years earlier, from around 1815 to 1830!

Skill level for this pattern: The basic skirt could be made by anyone with good beginner\'s skillsif the ruched bands are omitted. You would still have a very elegant late Edwardian skirt. Although the ruched bandstake careful sewing, patience, andconsiderable time to make, theydon\'t require complicated skills or tailoring, so making this pattern with the ruched bands wouldbe suitable for someone with intermediate sewing skills.

We recommend taffeta for this skirt, to capture the original shape and style of the Edwardian garment. We used a lightweight shot silk taffeta in a spruce green to make our sample skirt from this pattern, and it was antique-perfect.

The skirt is designed with an interior \"corselet\", an inner, stiff waistband that actually fits slightly above the natural waistline. A clever full-length decorative tuck runs along each side of the skirt, concealing the side opening, which fastens with a small mother-of-pearl button, hooks and eyes, and press snaps. The back of the skirt is gathered at the waistline, creating an attractive slight \"bustle\" effect and adding to the sweep at the lower back. Although this skirt couldcertainly be worn with any blouse or top, if you want to wear it exactly as it would have been in 1912, wear a silk, linen or batiste blouse that has a snug belt with a fancy buckle at front.

Like all our patterns, this one is professionally printed from a clear, well-marked master on sturdy 20lb paper. It includes step-by-step instructions in English, with measurements in both inches and centimetres, a list of included pattern pieces, suggested fabric and notions list, and a copy of the original French fashion sketch. The pattern comes in a handy re-useable plastic envelope that you can store in a binder.

Size: This pattern is drafted as a multi-sized pattern-- seesizes below. You can use any combination of sizing you wish within these four marked sizes. Because of this, please be aware that no seam allowances are included on this pattern. However, there are only 2 main seamlines, and allowances are easy to add (instructions are given with the pattern). It is also easy to alter our pattern up or down one additional size should you wish to do so, using the existing size lines on the pattern as a guide.

Skirt length: The antique skirt was intended to be worn just above, but not touching the floor. If worn this way, the length is best for a person about 5\'4\" to 5\'5\" tall, wearing 2\" heels, and the pattern has been drafted accordingly-- see actual measurements below if made exactly as on the pattern. You can lengthen the skirt if you wish, and instructions are given with the pattern for doing this and other basic alterations.

MEASUREMENTS:

Our 4 sizes shown below are roughly equivalent to size 12, 14, 16 and 18 in modern commercialsewing patterns, but rely only onthe chart below:

Size

Waist (natural waistline)

Hip (6\" below waist)A67 cm (26-1/2\")91.5 cm (36\")B71 cm (28\")96.5 cm (38\")C76 cm (30\")102 cm (40\")D81 cm (32\")107 cm (42\")

Front Length (measured from natural waistline to finished hem for Size B - designed to bejust abovefloor length):107cm (42-1/4 inches) -the top of theskirt sits about 5cm (2\") above the natural waistline when worn, so total front length is about 112cm (44-1/4\").However, the skirt can easily be lengthened or shortened to fit your personal height.

Centre back length (from natural waistline):If made as on pattern for Size B: 109cm (43 inches) - this allows for the extra length the \"bustle\" effect at the back will take up, creating an even hem all around. This can be shortened or lengthened on the pattern.

Width around hem:206cms (85 inches)--for Size B if madeaccording to pattern.

We take these patterns from the \"bare bones\" original antique patterns or sketches (usually French), re-draw, correct, and clarify the outlines, add markings useful to modern sewers, then write complete, new instructions in English. A great deal of time and skill goes into creating each of our patterns. To see what sets our \'Edwardian Rose\' patterns apart from other antique patterns, click on the links under \"Store Pages\"at lower left on our store home page.

If you\'ve ever tried to sew from an original antique pattern, you will know that they can be a challenge at best and mystifying at worst, especially the \"instructions\", which were often no more than a few lines of text. The reason for this was that it was assumed most patterns in Edwardian publications would be made up by professional dressmakers with experience in the construction techniques of the era. We\'ve taken the hard work out of interpreting these fashions to make them accessible to modern sewers.

The only thing that is not included isa pattern layout sketch. This is because fabric widths can vary considerably, giving many possible layouts for one pattern - these would be very time-consuming to anticipate anddraw out, and would unnecessarily increase the cost of developing these patterns. We suggest you do a test layout for all our patterns, based on the width of your chosen fabric. Otherwise, all the information you will need to complete the garment is included.

This skirt would be lovely to make up for a special dinner or event (we recommend a richly-coloured silk taffeta for best effect). The pattern itself would be a thoughtful and unique gift for an heirloom sewing enthusiast just as it is. Of course the authenticity of the design also makes this pattern ideal for theatrical costumers or historical exhibit purposes.

A beautiful Titanic-era skirt to make for a dressy event!
