Multi-Size Sewing Pattern for Authentic 1912 Edwardian/Titanic Era Skirt with Soutache Design

An Antique Treasure Exclusively from

The Fashion Archaeologist ~ What Rose Really Wore!

Another of our \'Edwardian Rose\' antiquesewing patterns, this one (#1912-A-064) is for a lovely late-Edwardian/Titanic era skirt with soutache embroidery, developed directly from a French design ofearly 1912. Soutache was used extensively in the Edwardian era, and this skirt, with its shaped flounce, shows off the soutache design to great effect. A perfectexample of theelegant daywear that epitomized Edwardianstyle of the Titanic era!

This pattern is drafted inmulti-size(see details in listingor on photo of pattern envelope).

Scroll down to see all photos of our sample skirt (inmaroon wool) made from this pattern.

Please note that this listing is for the sewing pattern only, for the Skirt. The finished garment and other items displayed in the photos are not included. However, the patterns for thejacket #1912-A-005 and blouse #1912-A-009 shown in the pictures are available in our store in CD or paper version.

If you\'ve beensearching for a truly authentic piece of fashion history to sew foran historic event or occasion, look no further! In the spring of 1912, thisskirtwould have been the height of fashionable daytimewear, straight fromthe pages of La Mode the high-waisted (Empire) style of the era -- the top of the skirt sits about 4cm (1-1/2\") above the natural waistline, and is slightly higher at back than at front. It closesat back with an Edwardian buttoned placket.

The skirt is fitted through the upper hips and waist with darts, and a curved, flat flounce runs down the front on each side, and around the lower portion of the skirt. The highlight is the soutache trim - the soutache design is taken directly from the antique design and is included in our pattern. There are no side seams; each half of the skirt back and side is cut so that it overlaps the centre front panel and finished with decorative top-stitching.The skirt is intended to be unlined.

The front silhouette is columnar but the back is rather full to accommodate layers of lingerie. Thiswas part of the 1912 design, and we have not altered this aspect in our pattern. The skirt looks best if worn with Edwardian lingerie, which fills out the shape and creates elegant folds at the back.

Sew this skirt for cooler weather in wool twill or gabardine, or in linen or suit-weight cotton for summer. A velveteen or heavier silk shantung or faille would be appropriate for informal evening or dinner wear.We made our sampleskirt inwool and trimmed it withruby-red soutache, applied by machine. Our pattern includes instructions on applying the soutache design as in the 1912 original, or you can use braid or passementerie trim for a simpler trim, as shown in some of the photos.

In the spring of 1912, thisskirt would have been worn as part of a dressy tailored ensemble for daytime or with a fancy blouse for informal dinner or evening wear. This skirt coordinates beautifully withour \"Directoire\" jacket (pattern #1912-A-005), as shown in the photos.

Skill level for this pattern(3/5):This skirt is quite straightforward for an antique design and could be made by anyone with intermediate sewing skills. It can made even simpler by omitting the soutache and using a zipper as the back closure -- you would still have an elegant Edwardian skirt. Although the soutache does take careful sewing and time to make, it doesn’t require complicated skills and adds to the antique appeal of the garment.

Recommended Fabrics: Medium-weight natural fabrics with body and a firm weave, such as wool twill or gabardine, linen, suit-weight cottons and heavier-weight silk shantung. If you are applying the soutache, the fabric must be sturdy enough to support it. Lightweight velveteen is also suitable, although somewhat more difficult to work with, but limp, flowing fabrics like velvet and satin are not.

Our \'Edwardian Rose\' Patterns:Like all our patterns, this one is printed on sturdy 20lb paper. It includes step-by-step instructions in English, with measurements in both inches and centimetres, a list of included pattern pieces, suggested fabric and notions list, and a copy of the original French fashion sketch. In addition, our pattern comes in a handy re-useable plastic storage envelope.

We takeour patterns from the \"bare bones\" original antique designs (usually French), re-draw, correct, and clarify the outlines, addhelpful markings, then write complete English instructions. If you\'ve ever tried to sew from an original antique pattern, you\'ll know that they can be a challenge at best and mystifying at worst, especially the \"instructions\", which were often no more than a few lines of text.

A great deal oftime and skill goes into creating each of our patterns. We\'ve taken the hard work out of interpreting these fashions to make them accessible to modern sewists. To see what sets our \'Edwardian Rose\' patterns apart from other antique patterns, click on \"Store Pages\" in the lower left navigation bar on our store Home page.

The only thing that isnotincluded isa pattern layout sketch. This is because fabric widths can vary considerably, giving many possible layouts for one pattern - these would be very time-consuming to anticipate anddraw out, and would unnecessarily increase the cost of developing these patterns. We therefore suggest you do a test layout, based on the width of your chosen fabric. Otherwise, all the information you will need to complete the garment is included.
