Med/Large Dual Size Pattern for 1904 Ladies\' Drawersfrom an Authentic French Design!

Another Treasure from the Fashion Archaeologist!

Here is asewing pattern (our \'Edwardian Rose\' Pattern #1904-A-002) for that \"unmentionable\" part ofEdwardian lingerie – authentic \"open\" drawers (pantaloons). Thisdesign was developed from a 1904 Frenchoriginal antique pattern for \"elegant ladies\' drawers\", but our pattern is drafted to modern proportions ina very wearableMedium/Large size. Please scroll down to see photos of the samplegarment made from this pattern. [Please note that this listing is for thesewing pattern only, not the finished garment shown in the photos, which are forillustration purposes only ].

These drawers are typical of the era, in loose and roomy \"open\" style with a deep semi-circular flounce, adjusted for individual comfort and fit by a ribbon tieand small buttons at back. The flounce is embellished with dainty rows of tucks, lace insertion and lace beading with ribbon, while the lower edge is finished with lace or eyelet for the obligatory frou-frou at the bottom. The original 1904 pattern called for lightweight cotton batiste, but any light and flowing natural fabric may be used, such as handkerchief linen, china silk or even satin. For an antique-style wedding, made up in an exquisitesheer Swiss batiste andwith some creative embellishment (such as Val lace motifs), these drawers could be made beautiful enough to be worthy of the finest Edwardian trousseau.

Sewing skill level(2.5/5) Advanced Beginner/Intermediate: This design is quite versatile, and can be made rather plain, or very, veryfancy, with as much added lace and decoration as desired, so the level of difficulty depends on the amount of finishing desired. As a basic period garment, this patternwould be a great choice for someone with advanced beginner\'s sewing skills who would like to try their hand at heirloom sewing, or an easy project for anyone with intermediate sewing experience.

Size:This pattern is drafted to fit a ladies’ modernmedium to largesize. Because the waist and hips are very loose-fitting and the waistband is adjusted with ribbon ties (the back of the bloomers is gathered once tied), it will easily fit a range of sizes (see below). If you have basic alteration skills, it can be altered up or down by a size or two beyond the pattern, or shortened (or lengthened). Below are the suggested best size ranges for this pattern as drafted:

Waist: 71 to 89cm (28 to 36 inches)

Hips: 96 to 114cm(38 to 46 inches)

Length of drawers from waist to hem, as per pattern, at side seams:About73.5cm (29 inches).Thislength can easily be alteredup or down.

Actual measurement around waistband, as per pattern: About 114cm (45 inches). This allows enough room to draw up the waistband tie, to create pleats/gathering at back.

Width around lower edge of lace at hem of each leg: About 3.10metres (114 inches)

Our \'Edwardian Rose\' Patterns:Like all our patterns, this one is professionally printedon sturdy 20lb paper. It includes detailed cutting and sewing instructions in English, with measurements in inches and centimetres, a suggested fabric and notions list, as well as a copy of the antique fashion sketch. The pattern comes in a reusable plastic envelope that we know sewists will appreciate! We take these patterns from the \"bare bones\" original antique patterns (usually from French sources), re-draw, correct, and clarify the outlines, assemble the pattern piece(s)onto one sheet, add helpfulmarkings and notations, then write step-by-step Englishinstructions. If you have ever tried to sew from an original antique pattern, you\'ll know they can be a challenge at best and mystifying at worst, with few (if any) sewing instructions. We\'ve takenthehard work out of interpreting these fashions to make them accessible for modern sewing. The only thing that isnotincluded is a pattern layout sketch. This is because fabric widths can vary considerably, giving many possible layouts for one pattern. These would be very time-consuming to anticipate and draw out, and would unduly increase the cost of developing our patterns. We therefore suggest that you do a test layoutbased on the width of your chosen fabric. Otherwise, all the information you will need to complete the garment is included.

If you love heirloom sewing (or would like an introduction to heirloom sewing) and want to try making an historically accurate piece of Edwardian lingerie, this pattern is ideal! The pattern would of course be perfect for theatrical or historical exhibit purposes. It would also make a thoughtful and unique gift for an heirloom sewing enthusiast.
A pretty piece of authentic Edwardian lingerie fashion to sew.Click on our store icon -- \"The Fashion Archaeologist\" for other beautiful antique patterns and more!
