Sewing Pattern for Authentic 1909Edwardian Grand Ball or Evening gown~ Multi-Size (SM to XL) ~

~ Exclusively from the Fashion Archaeologist ~

This is \'Edwardian Rose\' antique sewing pattern(#1909-A-003) for a fabulousEdwardian/Titanic era ball or evening gown from the height of the Belle Époque, with a flattering empire silhouette, draped lace overbodice, and formal Edwardian train. This pattern was developed directly from a French design from late 1909 and was a gown that would have been fashionable throughout 1910 to 1912.Unlike the single-sized, verysmall antique original, we\'ve drafted this pattern in a multi-size format (see details below, and on pattern envelope in photo above).Scroll down to see all photos of the two sample gowns made from this pattern.

(Please note this listing is for the sewing pattern only. The finished dressesand hat used for display purposes are not included in this listing).

From 1909 through 1912, this would have beena gown forthe most formal of evening occasions, worn with opera-length gloves and hair embellishments such as a jewelled band or ostrich feathers. If you\'ve beensearching for a truly authentic piece of fashion history to sew for a formalhistoric event or occasion, look no further!

Details:

This dramatic gown is constructed, like all formal garments of the Edwardian era, in successive layers on a boned foundation (underbodice) to create the iconic \"S-bend\" silhouette, and ourpattern follows the authentic construction techniques of the time. For this reason, the pattern is rated for \"Advanced\" sewists -- see details below. The pattern consists of all pieces required to make a gown with a fitted, boned taffeta foundation, an underskirt (with optional bottom frill), a silk charmeuse or satin bodice and outer skirt (with wide evening train), and a cleverly cut draped lace overbodice with dropped shoulder seams and elegantly shaped elbow-length sleeves. The outer (satin/charmeuse) gown is designed with a raised waistline (\"Empire\" waistline) that is closely fitted from the bust through the waist, and along the upper hip. The skirt flares out below the hips and a large triangular bias insert at centre back creates the \"swirl\" of the train.

To enhance the intended silhouette of the design, we recommend that you plan to wear Edwardian-style lingerie (including a petticoat) underneath, as it would have been worn in 1909. See our store for authentic Edwardian lingerie patterns.

The skirt/bodice joining seam is intended to be outlined by a sequined band, and the bodice front is embellished with an optional sequined appliqué or guipure motif. The pattern includes the lovely silk bows and elegant streamer-like \"tails\" at the back. The back of the gown is almost more beautiful than the front!

As can be seen in the photos, the front silhouette of this gown is quite columnar, but the skirt is very full in back. This was integral to the 1909 design, and we have not altered this aspect of the pattern. Wearing the gown with Edwardian lingerie will fill out the shape and create elegant folds in the skirt back.

Please note: This is a big pattern that consists ofFOUR large sheets - because of the size and weight, shipping costsare higher than for oursmaller patterns.

The photos show this gown pattern made in two versions: one in size Medium in purple silk satin with off-white lace, the other in taupe silk charmeuse with ochre-coloured lace (in size Large).

Skill level for this pattern(4/5): Advanced. Please be aware that this is aprojectfor a confident, experienced sewist. You should be fully familiar with common construction terms and techniques, and with the process of personal fitting of a garment during construction. You should also be comfortable handling \"challenging\" fabrics (like silk satin), and bias cuts.

If you\'re able to construct a modern silk charmeuse evening gown with a boned foundation from a Vogue pattern (for example), you should find the types of skills required for our pattern to be very similar. However, it must be said there aremore difficult \"Advanced\" Vogue designer patterns, which is why we didn\'t rate the skill involved in this pattern at the highest 5/5 skill level.A complete sewing course! This pattern is more than just a sewing pattern with a few pages of instructions. It isa complete course on constructing a formal Edwardian evening gown. Besides the four large pattern sheets, the package includes an illustrated 33-page booklet of step-by-step instructions in English, including guidelines on making alterations beyond the sizes and lengths printed on the pattern.

Historical notes are included, as well as links to annotated photographs on our web gallery showing each segment of construction to guide you through the entire process in visual steps.

Once you\'ve completed this gown, you will have the skills and techniques to be able to construct practically any authentic formal Edwardian evening gown.

Recommended Fabrics: Solid coloured silk satin or charmeuse for the outer bodice and skirt; fine lace yardage for the draped overbodice; silk taffeta or fine cotton percale for the foundation, and China silk or Bemberg rayon lining for the underskirt. This gown pattern is not suitable for printed, striped, or diagonal fabrics. Synthetic satins are not recommended.

Our \'Edwardian Rose\' Patterns:We takeour patterns from the \"bare bones\" original antique designs (usually French), re-draw, correct, and clarify the outlines, addhelpful markings, then write detailed English instructions.

If you\'ve ever tried to sew from an original antique pattern, you\'ll know that they can be a challenge at best and mystifying at worst, especially the \"instructions\", which were often no more than a few lines of text.

A great deal oftime and skill goes into creating each of our patterns. We\'ve taken the hard work out of interpreting these fashions to make them as accessible as modern commercial sewing patterns. To see what sets our \'Edwardian Rose\' patterns apart from other antique patterns, click on \"Store Pages\" in the lower left navigation bar on our store Home page.

A NOTE ABOUT EDWARDIAN FIT: As this design is taken directly from an antique original, intended for an evenly-proportioned figure of the era, the overall fit will be closer than in modern garments, with less wearing ease, especially through the upper arms, armscye, shoulders and neck. If your bust measurement is at or near the maximum for a particular size and you have a larger frame or heavier upper body, be aware that you may need to alter the pattern, or make some adjustments to the garment while sewing.Guidelines are given in the sewing instructions for making moderate adjustments in fit during construction, and for altering the paper pattern as far as is possible for an antique design.

A sewing pattern for a rare and beautiful formal Edwardian gown!
