Noritake Harlequin Inkwell Box in Lovely Luster striking piece that doesn\'t come to market often, with lovely luster finish on the blue outfit, and also on the pale yellow, celadon green and orange on the Pierrot collar. As a result of the bright colors and all that delicious luster, this little harlequin just glows! She has an expressive sweet face with silly side-glancing googly eyes; she\'ll make you smile every time you look at her. What is Luster?- Noritake is famous for its bright and beautiful lusterware. The method of producing lusterware was labor intensive and required many firings and different types of kilns. To produce the unique pearlescent finish, they first applied a primary application of a bright solid-colored glaze. Different color glazes require different firing temperatures so this step could involve several separate firings. Once that was done, a thin metallic overglaze was applied. The luster overglaze was made from gold or platinum which was chemically dissolved and brushed on. Once fired again ( a low-temp firing in a special oxygen-free kiln ) the piece would finally emerge from the kiln dressed in a lovely iridescent glow. This was a time-consuming process, and the metal was expensive, which was why it was applied thinly and is rather delicate. When you see a pink or purple tint in the luster, like we see in Noritake\'s desirable blue glaze, that was made with gold. A white or silvery pearlescent glow was made with platinum. Luster glazing is a very old (ancient) art form dating back to the 3rd century AD.
Here is the same piece sold at a U.S. sale house;it is exactly the same as the one I\'m selling, including the modeling, colors and size,
and the descriptionsays it has the red M in wreathe mark.It sold for $650 - that\'s the selling price before the buyer\'s premium is added on, so it actually sold for $810.The piece I\'m selling is the same piece, 100% guaranteed Noritake - red wreathe mark - used in the 1930s,
but on my piece the mark has been rubbed off. Sometimes owners removed these marks during WWII
and that is likely what happened here. You can see the remnant of the red mark with a loupe:(Base enlarged to show remnants of red wreathe mark.)4.25 inches tall.
Condition - There is some paint rub, see /enlarge photos.
Tiny chip to top rim (colored in) - not noticed when top is on,
and chipping to inner rim of inkwell, concealed when top is on -- see / enlarge photos.
As you can see, it displays beautifully just the way it is, though it would only take
a little restoration to get it back to a perfect state.
