Description:

FRESH FROM AN OLD COLLECTION.

A MUSEUM QUALITY CONNECTICUT WINDSOR CHAIR SIGNED BY \"A.D.ALLEN\" WHO WAS A SON-IN-LAW OF THE FAMOUS EBENEZER TRACY WINDSOR CHAIR MAKER OF CONNECTICUT.  Amos Denison Allen was a chairmaker who apprenticed with Ebenezer Tracy of Windsor, Connecticut for at least five years. His apprenticeship expired on his twenty-first birthday, on 13 March 1795. Shortly after, in 1796, he married Ebenezer Tracy\'s daughter,
Lydia; they had at least two children, Frederick Allen and Lydia Allen, Jr. Amos Denison Allen\'s brother in law, Frederick Tracy, was his
apprentice in South Windham, Connecticut and, later, his partner in the firm Allen & Tracy. Some of Amos Denison Allen\'s account books
survive, covering the years from September 1796 to January

Eastern Connecticut, Circa 1796-1810.

WINDSOR CHAIRS DON\'T GET MUCH BETTER THAN THIS.  A SIGNED EXAMPLE BY ONE OF THE BEST CHAIRMAKERS IN CT HISTORY IN NEAR PERFECT CONDITION, PERFECT FORM AND THE BEST OLD SURFACE...

A VERY RARE \"SIGNED\" EXAMPLE OF A RARE A.D.ALLEN WINDSOR BOWBACK SIDECHAIR MADE IN THE MANNER OF THE SCHOOL OF TRACEY WINDSOR MAKERS.

VERY FEW SIGNED A D ALLEN EXAMPLES SURVIVE AND EVEN FEWER OF THEM SURVIVE IN NEAR PERFECT CONDITION WITH THE BEST OLD GRUNGY SURFACE, FULL FOOT HEIGHT AND TAPERING LEGS THAT END AT 1/2\" ACROSS.

This great chair is THE BEST example of an Eastern Connecticut BOWBACK BAMBOO TURNED Windsor from the latter part of the 18th century. The uniquely turned legs are the very best, FULL HEIGHT. The BOLDLY shaped saddle seat is in Chestnut which is typical of the Tracy School and usually used in Allen\'s examples and one of the best I\'ve seen. The side stretchers and shaped center stretcher are classic Tracy School. The bow back crest is of hickory and the highly Bulbous turned spindles are unique to the Tracy School.

This great chair came from a private collection. Although signed A.D. ALLEN, it is a classic Tracy School Windsor. E. Tracy is perhaps the best known Connecticut Windsor chairmaker\'s of the 18th Century. His examples are considered the pinnacle of Windsor chair making.

\"The Eastern Connecticut-Rhode Island border region was the home of a number of Windsor chair makers during and after the American Revolution.
A whole school of chair making evolved under one family led by Ebenezer Tracy. The captain, who lived and worked in Lisbon, created a unique and beautiful style, one marked by bold turnings, widely splayed legs and painstakingly carved seats.  The captain, his three sons, two sons-in-law, and various apprentices created thousands of highly distinctive chairs in various forms - writing arm, fan back, bow back, continuous arm and settee, among others. Today, surviving Tracy chairs are highly prized by collectors. For a similar example see, \"The Windsor Style in America\", by Charles Santore. Also, see the front picture of Santore\'s book for the exact turnings on the legs and saddle seat.

As for condition it is wonderful. There are no repairs or restorations. The bow is fully intact with no breaks. The spindles are original and damage free. The legs are tight and the feet are full height and all original. The surface is GRUNGY AND DARK WITH AGE, TRACES OF THE ORIGINAL DARK STAIN STILL SURVIVE.

For a similar example see, \"The Windsor Style in America\", by Charles Santore; and \"American Woodenware\", by Warman, for a signed TRACY Windsor armchair with the identical leg turnings. The last photo is from Santore\'s book.
