sale includesthe pictured Bureau of Prohibition US Department of Justice Special Agent Badgeand a Treasury Department Bureau of Prohibition Regulation Manual ofInstructions for Officers and Agents in the Field, Dated October 20, 1927. The badge is in very good condition but does showsigns of wear, scuffing and patina in areas.It is marked on the back with the number 29 and there is also a small “RG”stamped in the upper right corner. Thepin on the back functions properly. The manualis also in very good condition but does show signs of wear and use please see picsfor greater detail. The page behind the titlepage contains a confidential statement and is stamped “2935”, I do not know ifthis is the agent’s number that used this manual or not. The badge measures approximately 2 3/8” tallx 1 5/8” wide and the manual is 5 ¾” x 4”.

The badgeand manual were purchased from a local estate sale in the Florida Panhandle;there was no information available from the original owner about the history orwho it had been assigned to. The badge hadjust been handed down, a family heirloom.After doing a little research, I found the 1930 US Censushad thefamily living in the Providence Rhode Island area. The head of the household was Arnold Bennett,born in 1896 and would have made him 34 years old in 1930, a typical age for anagent. I continued to research but couldnot find any ties of Arnold Bennett to the Bureau. I am still trying to research and will postany more information to this listing if it comes available. If anyone has any historicalinformation about this badge, it would greatly be appreciated.

InterestingHistory: By 1930, the crime fightingmission began to conflict with the U.S. Department of the Treasury’s philosophyof voluntary compliance with the laws.The crime fighting activities of the Bureau of Prohibition weretransferred to the U.S. Department of Justice.The U.S. Department of the Treasury created the Bureau of IndustrialAlcohol to carry out its remaining regulatory functions.
