C 1900 Native American HUPA YUROK or KAROK LG Indian HAT Basket Klamath Ca.:
$785.00

A wonderful very finely hand woven Hupa, Native American Indian basket hat in very good condition! I would estimate that it was made in the early 1900\'s, given the family history, maybe earlier. The basket or hat measures approx 4\" tall and 7\" across the opening of the hat at its widest. . The artist who made this amazing basket is unknown. This basket comes from the granddaughter of the Hupa woman that bought the basket while living in the Klamath Indian land in Northern California. This is the 6th of several fine baskets that I will be listing in the upcoming weeks. These baskets have never been on the market before today. I am not an expert in Hupa indian baskets so please feel free to ask any questions before offerding and I will do my best to provide the answers. No question is stupid if it avoids a problem down the line. Here is the history as known. The Great grandmother was Ellen Wood John married James Christopher Isle before 1883. The Indian census shows 3 children as members of the Lower Klamath River tribe. One daughter was named Agnes and lived on the reservation. The mother Ellen died in 1898 . Husband James Christopher Isle remarried and moved to Etiwanda Ca. around 1902. His 4 children were all listed as living at the Hoopa Valley Indian Boarding School on the Hoopa Valley Reservation in Huumboldt County in the 1900 Census. The 1910 Census shows Agnes living in Etiwanda with her father. She would have been around 21 years of age. She lived in this area for the rest of her life. According to her grandaughter, Agnes did not like her Indian heritage and did not refer to it. However when the family moved to Etiwanda they were accompanied by a pet BEAR named Mariah who eventually became a resident of the San Diego Zoo. All that is known about the baskets and hats is that they were inherited from Agnes to the grandchildren. This is a special piece so do not miss it. This piece has never been on the market before. I will double box this item. Please contact me before payment is made for a total of shipping. This piece deserves special packing.
