c1880 BUFFALO BILL WILD WEST PERFORMER A H BOGARDUS AND SONS CABINET CARD PHOTO:
$178.50

Outstanding and very rare, original ca1880 Cabinet Card Photograph of Champion Sharpshooter and Buffalo Bill’s Wild West Cast member Capt. A H Bogardus along with three of his sons who also performed with Buffalo Bill’s Show.

This wonderful card mount photo measures approx. 3 3/4\" by 5 1/2\" and is mounted on its original card mount (overall size is 4 1/4\" x 6 1/2\") and is signed by the famous New York City, celebrity photographer Charles Eisenmann.

The photograph pictures the World champion Trap Shooter and inventor of the Glass Target Ball, Captain Adam H. Bogardus holding his double barrel Shotgun and wearing a number of his championship medals. Captain Bogardus is surrounded by three of his sons – Edward, Peter and Henry each holding their target rifles and each wearing Shooting Medals. Printed text on the mount below the image reads “Capt. A. H. Bogardus & Sons / Champion Shots of the World”.

In 1877, Capt. Adam H. Bogardus, already an established market hunter and an internationally known crack shot, introduced his patented glass target ball, a sturdy and dependable trap for throwing them, and a simple set of rules with which competitive shooters could blast away at them.

With his already established fame — he had toured England (and Paris) in 1875, 1877 and 1878 — he was tapped for even greater renown in the early 1880s when Buffalo Bill Cody hired him to join the most popular wild west show the world would ever know. With the occasional addition of one or more of Bogardus\' exhibition-shooting sons (Edward, Peter, Eugene and Henry), the Captain became the main shooting act in Buffalo Bill\'s Wild West, and would be seen by hundred of thousands of cheering spectators.

After three years, due to business complications, personality conflicts and bad luck, Bogardus left the show and was replaced by perhaps the only person whose fame and skills could match — and even surpass — his own : Annie Oakley. But one must scour hundreds of books, thousands of newspaper clippings — many copied directly from the exaggerated wild west show press releases — to get even an idea of how impressive the truth really is.

Provenance: This fantastic Photograph descended directly in the family of Irma Louise Cody Garlow, Buffalo Bill Cody\'s last surviving child. Buffalo Bill and his wife Louisa Frederici Cody (1843-1921) had four children but only their two daughters - Arta (1866-1904) and the baby Irma (1883-1918) lived to adulthood. Irma married Frederick Harrison Garlow Sr. (1880-1918) and had 3 children - Frederick Harrison Garlow Jr. (1911-1985); William Joseph Garlow (changed name to Cody) (1913-1992) and Jane Cody Garlow (1909-1987). When Irma and Fred Garlow Sr. died within three days of each other during the influenza pandemic of 1918, the three young children were cared for by their Grandmother Louisa, wife of Buffalo Bill Cody. Fred Garlow Jr. married Margaret Southerland and they had two children Patricia Ann (b.1948) and Mark Frederick (b. 1952).

In 2014 the bulk of the Cody-Garlow Collection was sold at sale with Patsy holding onto her favorite Photograph of Bill and performers from the Show. With patsy’s death last year, we were luck enough to purchase some of the most intimate, one of a kind Photos of Bill Cody which we will be offering over the next few weeks in our weekly sales.

The Photograph offered here was the property of Patricia Ann \"Patsy\" Garlow, Buffalo Bill\'s direct great-granddaughter. It was the property of the Cody-Garlow family and was originally the property of \"William F. Buffalo Bill\" Cody.

This very rare and fascinating ca1880 Sharp Shooting Champions and BBWW Show Performers Cabinet Card photo is in very good condition – generally clean and crisp without staining or soiling but with some scattered, small spots of foxing. The focus is sharp, the tonality rich and the contrast strong. The card mount is original and also in very good condition – generally clean and crisp with some very light edge wear.

A very rare and striking Cabinet Card Photograph of perhaps the most acclaimed family of American Rifle or Trap Shooting Champions - Captain Adam Henry Bogardus and his sons and a fantastic addition to any collection!!!
