ca1905 BLACK AMERICANA TIN LITHOGRAPH TIP TRAY WITH BLACK WOMAN PICKING COTTON:
$107.50

Beautiful and original, ca1905, Black Americana subject, Advertising Tip Tray for \"Cottolene\" Shortening manufactured by the N. K. Fairbank Company of Chicago, Illinois.

This wonderful Cottolene Tip Tray measures approx. 4 1/4” in diameter and features wonderful image of an African American Woman (likely meant to represent a slave) picking cotton in the field of a Plantation. Her charming little daughter accompanies the woman while she works. There is text around the rim of the Tray that reads \"The Source of Cottolene / Best for Shortning - Best for Frying\". The back of the tray features an image of a tin container with advertising text promoting this innovative alternative to lard.

The Tray is marked by the manufacturer \"Passaic Metal Ware Co. Litho., Passaic, N.J.\" at the bottom on the inner edge of the raised rim. The Chromolithography is of the very highest quality and the Tip Tray is very attractive.

Cottolene was a brand of shortening made of beef tallow and cottonseed oil produced in the USA from 1868 until the mid 20th century. It was the first mass-produced and mass-marketed alternative to lard and is remembered today chiefly for its iconic national ad campaign and the cookbooks that were written to promote its use.

This beautiful ca1905, \"Cottolene\" Shortening Advertising Tip Tray is not a reproduction, reissue or restrike but is an original ca1905 Tray manufactured for the N. K. Fairbanks Co.. and their product.

This outstanding, Advertising Tip Tray is in very good condition - the lithography is bright, crisp and beautiful. There are no significant scratches, scuffs, surface loss or damage except for a small burn mark near the head of the little girl. There are a few other very tiny surface blemishes but overall the lithograph is well preserved and displays beautifully. There is some wear on the reverse (as can be seen in the scans below).

A rare and very attractive, ca1905, Black Americana subject, Advertising Tip Tray for \"Cottolene\" Shortening and a fantastic addition to any collection!!!
