Image 2:The wood-mount measures 7” x 4”. The glass and the wood are without cracks.Image 3:Paper label along one edge of wood-mount states: “AMERICAN CIVIL WAR. Assassination of Pres. LINCOLN in his private box at Ford’s Theatre, Washington, April 14th, 1865.”Image 4:Paper label on one side of the wood-mount, identifying the slide as having been made by T. H. McAllister, Optician, 627 Broadway, New York. The paper label and the thickness of the wood-mount date the slide to the 1860s, early 1870s - as the century wore on, McAllister started using thinner wood-mounts and began stamping their name and address directly into the wood in lieu of a paper label.Image 1:This is the illustration that appeared on the front page of Frank Leslie’s Illustrated Newspaper for April 29, 1865 over the caption “ASSASSINATION OF PRESIDENT LINCOLN IN HIS PRIVATE BOX AT FORD’S THEATRE, WASHINGTON, APRIL 14 - From a sketch by our special artist Albert Berghaus.” It was Berghaus’s rendering that would be reworked by numerous artists over the succeeding years.
