Wood Mount Magic Lantern Glass Slide, 19th CenturyItem description is keyed to the numbered images above. The numbers and the word WATERMARK do not appear on the actual slide or slides.
Image 2:The wood-mount measures 7” x 4”. The glass and the wood are without cracks.Image 3:Paper label along one edge of wood-mount states: “AMERICAN CIVIL WAR. Assassination of Pres. LINCOLN in his private box at Ford’s Theatre, Washington, April 14th, 1865.”Image 4:Paper label on one side of the wood-mount, identifying the slide as having been made by T. H. McAllister, Optician, 627 Broadway, New York. The paper label and the thickness of the wood-mount date the slide to the 1860s, early 1870s - as the century wore on, McAllister started using thinner wood-mounts and began stamping their name and address directly into the wood in lieu of a paper label.Image 1:This is the illustration that appeared on the front page of Frank Leslie’s Illustrated Newspaper for April 29, 1865 over the caption “ASSASSINATION OF PRESIDENT LINCOLN IN HIS PRIVATE BOX AT FORD’S THEATRE, WASHINGTON, APRIL 14 - From a sketch by our special artist Albert Berghaus.” It was Berghaus’s rendering that would be reworked by numerous artists over the succeeding years. A secondary caption in Frank Leslie’s identifies the subjects from left to right: “Booth…Mr. Lincoln…Mrs. Lincoln….Miss [Clara] Harris….Major [Henry] Rathbun [actually Rathbone].”This is one of 8 American Civil War or Abraham Lincoln-related lantern-slide sales ending within 25 minutes of each other. We combine shipping on multiple lots.
