Civil War Veteran Watch Fob Chief Surgeon JW Houston 72nd & 43rd PA Infantry -
This is an outstanding, unique Watch Fob which was custom-crafted for Civil War Dr Joseph Willis Houston, Assistant Surgeon for the 72nd Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry, and later Chief Surgeon for the 43rd Pennsylvania Emergency Troops. One of Houston\'s 7/8" uniform buttons was modified by a jeweler with a gold planchet on the back, and expertly engraved with "J.W. Houston, M.D. - Surgeon of PA. Vols. - Civil War - 1861-1865".
Dr Joseph Willis Houston (Feb. 14, 1834 - Jun. 5, 1920) graduated from Jefferson Medical College 1857. He served as a Pennsylvania Civil War Union Army Surgeon. He first served as an Assistant Surgeon in the 72nd Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry, being mustered in on July 31, 1862, and being discharged on October 6, 1862. He was then commissioned Chief Surgeon, 43rd Pennsylvania Emergency Troops on July 6, 1863, serving until his muster out on August 13, 1863. On November 30, 1892 he filed for a US Army Invalid Veteran Pension (Application #1139883, Certificate #977698). On June 20, 1920 his wife, Esther Rakestraw Houston, filed for a US Army Widow\'s Pension (Application #1160021, Certificate #891932).
A truly outstanding piece.
