Classic Vintage Carl Zeiss Contarex Super 35mm SLR Film Camera with 50mm f/2 Carl Zeiss Planar Prime Lens

Here we have for sale a classic vintage Zeiss Ikon Contarex Super 35mm SLR (Single Lens Reflex) camera. The camera is in poor condition with multiple issues and therefore being sold for spares or repair only with no returns. However, the camera is still working and may be of interest to a collector in its current state so we would encourage you to continue reading the description that follows.

Cosmetically the camera shows average signs of use with some minor dings and scuffs as might be expected of a camera of this age (circa Dec 1969 to Dec 1971). There do not appear to be any major cosmetic flaws.

Functionally the camera has eleven shutter speeds from 1 second to 1/1000th sec plus \'B\'. All shutter speeds are working with the slow ones sticking somewhat as you would probably expect. when firing the shutter there is what we would call a sneezing sound (if you are familiar with the shutters of the older Canon manual focus SLRs from the AE-1 era you may be familiar with this sound as they often had a similar sounding shutter). The shutter is controlled by means of a dial around the wind-on lever. The shutter curtain is intact although a bit mucky.

The light meter visible on the left of the top plate does not appear to be working. According to this website the later models of this camera had a CdS meter which would be battery powered but there is corrosion within the battery compartment (see below).

The lens is a Carl Zeiss Planar 50mm f/2 with apertures down to f/22. The apertures are controlled by means of what is known as the \'Light Selector Disc\' on the top front of the camera just below the film wind lever. The aperture opens and closes as it sees fit but usually settles in a somewhat small aperture position. It is definitely sticking quite badly and we can see some rust on some of the aperture blades.

Focusing is controlled by means of the large ring around the lens but it is not working. The ring can be turned freely although it also sticks at times but you can turn it as much as you like and the lens position does not alter. The lens appears to be focused at a very close distance and will not move from there.

Optically the lens appears reasonably bright although it is difficult to view through it properly as the aperture will not open when the lens is removed from the camera. There appears to be what may be some small fungus spots inside the lens.

When the lens is removed you can see some corrosion on what appears to be a spring clip below the mirror which is in fact the battery cover. We found considerable corrosion within the battery compartment and assume this may be the reason the meter does not function. The battery that was inside the camera has been disposed of and if you would like to try a battery yourself then you will need to obtain PX625 battery. Also the mirror itself has some corrosion of the silvering particularly at the bottom of the mirror.
