Confederate Civil War shell of unknown manufacture, excellent condition: $272.00
Here you have a shell of unknown provenance. My opinion is, it is Confederate. It has a mold seam which is seen on Confederate shells but never on Union or British imported rounds. {see picture #5} Also, about 20 years ago, I examined an identical shell minus the two lead sabots bands, This shell was recovered at the 1st Indiana heavy artillery battery at Fort Blakely, Ala. I assume the Confederates fired it into the battery and it slung the lead bands, quite common for lead sabots. It\'s diameter mic\'s at 3.045\" best as I can tell. It is 6.4\" tall and weighs 9.5lbs. The shell is empty and contains no powder. The fuze apparently was pewter and blew out or squibbed as remnants of pewter are in the fuze hole, it is a fired shell. A similar shell, also unknown, is shown in Dickey and George\'s book on page 340. Any info buyers may care to send me is welcome. This is a sale. Happy offerding!
