Early Leica M3 Rangefinder Camera & Lens, Double Stroke, ca.1956

*** ***

Up for offer is an early Leica M3 range finder camera from 1956 in very good condition. It is a Leica M3 Double Stroke Body, serial number 754648, made inWetzlar, Germany around 1956. The viewfinder is bright and clear, with bright frame lines. The rangefinder works. The shutter curtain appears in good condition, and shutter operates smoothly, although I have not tested the timing/accuracy of the shutter speed. The black textured covering on the Leica is not cracked or broken and the overall appearance is good to verygood.Thebottom plate has the 3/8\" tripod thread. The back has the correct ASA 1000 dial.

With the Leica M3, Leica placed a tiny black wax-like seal above the lens mount on each camera to dissuade improper “repair” or maintenance of the camera by unqualified personnel.A minute cursive L is placed in that seal at the factory and if the camera is disassembled or worked on incorrectly, the seal islost/destroyed. This Leica M3 has an intact, untouched L seal.

The 50mm, f3.5Elmarlens has serial number 1335399.There does not appear to be any fungus, fogging or scratches to the glass elements. There is some wear/abrasion to a section of thefocingring’s edge, below the serial number. It does not affect its performance and is not readily apparent w/o close examination. The lens mount is in good condition with nobrassingand little wear. The camera and lens are in good cosmetic condition for their age, with light wear and bright marks/rub marks evident, especially on the bottom plate. There are some scuffs and a couple of small areas of paint loss along the perimeter of the film door. These are not major scratches, justwear. Please review all the photos for an idea of condition of the camera.

The Leica M3 is perfectly compatible with every Leica M lens (1954-today), and with a simple adapter, perfectly compatible with every screw-mount lens (1933-today). Leica has made lenses from 16mm through 400mm for use with the M3. The Leica M3 has a brilliant 0.91x viewfinder, and its flare-free rangefinder spot is the biggest, clearest and most accurate of any other camera.

Includedisthe original Leica lens cap, take-up spool and one sync plug cap.I will also include the leather case, which is worn and needs stitching, but is still very useable and good protection.

Also included is a rare how to book on Leica photography.
